First of all, thank you to everyone who did their best to make this very brief and bummer of a ski season happen at all.  There wasn't much to talk about, other than the utter lack of snow and abundance of warm weather, and worse still, the wind that kept us working awfully hard for very little skiing.  I guess that's how it goes sometimes.  I'd say this ranks up there with the top-3 or 4 worst years since I've been doing this since 1999, but as memory serves, those others were not quite this warm.

The other bad ones were:

1999/2000 (the winter preceding Cerro Grande Fire in May 2000 -- there was one early-season snow, then hardly anything the rest of the season)
2005/06 (dry, but much colder than this year; a very wet summer followed)
2010/11 (winter pretty much ended in January, but there was still snow on the ground and skiing until February -- the winter preceding Las Conchas Fire in June 2011)
2017/18 (probably the winter that most resembled this current one -- mild with hardly any precipitation)

OK, so that's the list of really bad winters.  There are some that were not all that great, but definitely better than this year.

Now that it definitely looks like spring has sprung and that last little gasp of winter is over, we need to start the spring cleanup project.  Mainly, we need to take down the fencing and signs.  I'm sure there is plenty of fallen tree clearing work to keep us occupied all summer as well, but we can wait for that.

I'll try to get up there one afternoon this week to start removing some fencing and rolling it up for retrieval.  I personally can't be there Saturday, but will go up again on Sunday.  If any of you can spare some time to go clip off the zip ties (and dispose of them properly...) and roll the fence section up, I'll go retrieve them and haul them down to the summer storage shed.

It may take us a couple of weeks to get it all cleared, but one or two good sessions will be enough to get most of it all done.

Thanks everyone.

Clay

Hi all,

I could go Saturday morning until 10 or after 1 pm.

Anyone else planning to be up there?

I’ll have my dog and it is also Skiesta at Pajarito this Saturday.

THANK YOU Clay and Groomers and everyone who helps maintain our Nordic trail!

Cheers,
Karen

No problem. I figure this will be a multi day process. I'll try to be up there by mid morning, but have a few things to get done in advance, like retrieve some equipment, etc. I'll also try to find the diagonal pliers (shippers) to cut off the zip ties.

Hopefully we can make a sizable dent this weekend.

If we get enough folks there tomorrow, we might get the fence down this weekend. A small but might group did some work today (Thank you Karen and Team!). What is left is mostly the front hill and lower road as well as the rock. There is a short section on the upper trail starting from point A that has double layer of fence that is still up too. Bring step stools as some of the fence is really high.

Eric, Isaac, and I got all the fence down on the upper trail from point A back to the front hill road this afternoon. It’s all rolled and stacked in a pile kind of midway there.

Cheers!

I got the stuff down at the Rock, as well as all the stuff on Dave's, etc., and a few rolls on the lower road. The signs are all down as well. I got with Kevin about the machine and trailer.

The fencing on the front hill and lower road is still ready to be removed.

Thanks to everyone who came out this weekend! The Sat crew was small but mighty with Sanna, Clay and the Browns💪and thanks to them the Sunday crew was able to finish the rest and it's all rolled up, including all the far out pieces AND all rolls put away in the shade fencing shed! WoHOO! Afterwards Kevin went back out and cleared the never ending deadfall blocking the lower road so that the mtb bike folks can use the trails, but there are some enormous trees to be cleared on the upper trails above J still that Clay and Kevin hope to tackle later but I'm sure would be happy for help.
I didnt have much for photos from the Sat crew but below is a little highlights reel for those who are able to view it and a group photo attached to this email for those who cant view the link. Thanks again, everyone!!

We also have equipment repairs and storage things to do.  The groomers have to be somewhat "summerized" for storage, as do the machines.

We'll definitely have to sharpen the big saws.  There are some whoppers blocking the upper trails!
