Hi All

1. Don't wonder why swift numbers are free falling.

This time it is Clarion Housing in Burgess Hill Sussex.

They are closing eaves and the swifts nests are in them.

See the screenshot.

I do not know if this group are members here? I have commented on their page with information.

2. Our Surey Police review officer emailed an apology last night: nobody from the Wildlife and Rural Crime desk has even looked at the report on nest 1 re: Raven Housing Trust. She has now flagged it as urgent and emailed them. She is great, the rest has been an appallling process.

Reported as a wildlife crime in action on 14/05

This has to stop.

Best
Annie & Barry

Hello Annie and all

I have emailed a contact that I have at Clarion, suggesting various urgent actions including contacting the local Swift group

Best wishes

Graham

Hi folks

Seeing a lot of this at the moment. At AFS we have a contact who heads up the voluntary Housing Association(HA) Biodiversity Network. She has been in touch directly with the Sustainability lead at Clarion, who was unaware of this and has taken action internally. Fingers crossed!

We have discussed the requirement for some more awareness raising around this issue with HA's and she has asked for a brief guidance note / document that can be circulated around the members (c 60 HA's in UK). We can of course produce something fresh for this, but I wondered if there was anything out there that had already been produced for this audience?

Thanks
Becky

I think this is something that the SLN planning group could put together in the same way as the Vet leaflet. I guess we haven’t done so as trying to find a way into the HAs isn’t easy but if Becky has a name then that’s good.
I expect some swift groups may already have such a leaflet that we could use as a starting point and if so perhaps you could email it to me.

Hi

I have worked with Housing Associations to a hit & miss degree! A leaflet would be super useful. They have so many Swift colonies on their properties, it needs a broader UK approach. Really appreciate your efforts on this Becky, Peta and potentially SLN.

Best Wishes,

Louise

Hi Becky

Did you discover whether Raven Housing Trust were already part of the Biodiversity Network, or have been approached to join it?

It really is what is needed and the document sounds like a great idea. We have not seen a document like that in circulation.

Best regards
Annie & Barry

Now it's happening here in Harbury (Warwickshire).  Orbit housing has started putting up scaffolding, three houses so far, one of which definitely has a nest site.  One of our group went to watch last night and saw a swift flying up at the scaffolding.  It's so distressing.

I have contacted 101 and it's been logged but by the time anything is done it will probably be too late.  My understanding is that Orbit are particularly poor at responding to anything at all.

Becky, does your housing association volunteer have any contacts there?  They are part of Fortem.

addendum to my message.  In my distress, I misread your email Becky.  My question should be, are Fortem or Orbit members of the voluntary Housing Association(HA) Biodiversity Network.

Can i ask if this HA Biodiversity Network includes any in Scotland?  Approaching HAs has been on my To Do list for years and i havent managed it yet.  If any of this includes HAs based in Scotland please do let me know!  I would also appreciate if there was a template letter to use for contact.
Thank you
Cally

Dear all

I feel another is in the making:

I have a young resident who keeps asking for help in Dorking re: Regent House redevelopment by Clarion Housing.

We are flat out, I can't help with this. I know the site but am 40 minutes drive away.  I have no idea if the colony is still there, but in 2021 there was a large colony. It is up for re-development by Clarion Housing. I have advised that if there are active nests, the building camnot be touched till they leave, to call Surrey Police if yhat os the case. Also that Clarion should be made aware and i recommended she contact them.

Best
Annie
