Dear all,

Has anyone come across anything detrimental about swift and swallow competition? In my view there isn't any but I was asked the question so I'm just checking with you all in this group just in case. Many thanks.

Here is an example of a Swift taking over a House Martin's nest:

Hi Elfyn
I havent witnessed or heard of conflict between swift and swallow, i would guess this is rare due to the different nesting habits?  I saw Dicks reply about the swifts and house martins and think this would be far more common.  I witnessed this behaviour last year where there were two bonded house martin nests and a swift was flying repeatedly at the nests  - it was very determined to investigate and was clinging on to either the wall or the nests (it was a very dark corner).  I couldnt stay to watch for long but i left quite concerned that the swift might damage the nests.  Of course nesting HMs will attract swifts but i was surprised at the swifts repetitive determination.

Thank you Cally and everyone for responding. I have passed on this information to the enquirer. In effect 'no conflict' between swifts and swallows.

Regards

Elfyn
