Starting April 8 and for the rest of the month we will have weekly virtual time trials on our standard course (starting from SSP to shark buoy and back). You will have one week to complete and enter your time on the course (I've linked the spreadsheet to the welcome message because it always seems to get buried and impossible to find). These will be individual time trials, honoring the social distancing we all need to be observing at this time. Our sport lends itself naturally to that distancing, so if you do the course with a buddy or two that should be fine, but make sure you keep your distance on land because we don't want to lose our water access. NO DRAFTING during this time! Record your time in the spreadsheet, and add a comment to when you ran the course and conditions. Stay safe and healthy!

And since solo time trials can be booooring, each week will have an additional challenge.

Week One: predicted log. Make your best guess for your time, hide your electronics during your run, record both your guess and actual time!

Love this idea, Traci, thanks! Kevin & I will be participating from Bham.

Everyone can play along! I've had a couple of requests from folks outside of Seattle. Join the fun! From my GPS logs the distance for our shark run is pretty dang close to 6.7km/4.16mi. So if you can't make it to Lake Washington and want to join us, set yourself an out-and-back loop of the same distance and go for it. If you want to play the predicted log aspect of the first week, enter your time estimate in the spreadsheet, then update with the actual time. This time trial is open from today until next Tuesday, the 14th. There will be a new challenge next week!

Thanks Traci and all,  for extending the time trial out here to Mission Beach on the Tulalip Rez.

I set a course that runs from the southern lip of Tulalip Bay nearly to Priest Point and back.  Always some tide and current action to unbalance the splits (25:45 & 22:33). I was pleased with  my performance, the first such distance run for over a year. Felt strong enough, with way lots of room for improvement.  Wouldn't have happened yet without your inspiration.

I'll be comparing the performance of the two open canoes (oldies from Mad River: the Monarch(Sea Wind) and the Traveler) that I am comfortable paddling in open water.

I've also attached Jim Shultz's great description of wind conditions at Jetty Island, a mile south of my course, for those who may not have seen it at Whatcom Paddlers.

See you next week,                Steve

Thanks to all who played! We had six paddlers submit a time, and five added the predicted log element. Here's how well we guessed:

Paul C: off by a mere 0:28!
Traci C: 1:31
Steve B: 1:37
Peter P: 3:00
Dot H: 3:09

Steve and Dot deserve a special prize for not overestimating their abilities, and clocking a time BETTER than their estimate. Well done all!
