Subject: Request for additional file and standardized manual for Sub-daily SWAT-CUP Calibration

Dear Dr. Karim,

I am currently working on SWAT simulation of flow and sediment discharge from a small watershed using sub-daily time step. I have successfully used SWAT-Cup for daily calibration, I would like to

continue with sub-daily calibration. I have tried to look for the information of sub-daily calibration using SWAT-Cup in SWAT-CUP google group, but I've found nothing. Instead of that, one of group members suggested me to directly contact you for additional files (.exe and .def) with standardized manual for sub-daily calibration.

If you don't mind, could you please provide the update files together with a standardized manual.

Thanks in advance.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely yours,

Ratino SITH

Hello Dr. Abbaspour

I used extract_res_No_Obs.exe file that you provided earlier. It worked very well for my watersheds which were created in SWAT version 2012/ Rev 622. But it doesn't work for the model in Rev 591, actually, the model stops running after EXTRACTING VARIABLE 1!  I am pretty the problem is related to the versions, because, in this model I tried to do uncertainty in the reach, it works without any problem.

Could you please help me to solve the problem?

Regards,
Fatemeh

Are the reservoir files different in the two swat versions?

Yes, I am calibrating about 11 models. One of them was created in SWAT 2012, Rev 591. This is the one that has the problem.

Could you send me the whole project please. Delete all output files and backup directory and zip the project.

Your project is a bit strange! You have no .res files and no res number 1.

Anyhow I wrote a program for you, you can get it from the Fatemeh directory in my ftp site below. Also, update your swatcup program. You are using an old version.

By the way you have a couple of mistakes in your files:

-        In file.cio ending Julian day is 364. It should be 365 or 366 if leap year

-        Beginning year of simulation is 1986 simulating for 15 years skipping 5 years. Therefore end year of simulation is 2000

In extract_res_No_obs.def end of simulation should be 2000 why do you give 2010?

Dear Dr. Abbaspour

Thank you so much!

I added the .exe file that you created into my project and ran the SWATCUP, but like the previous time, after extracting the variable 1 it stops running.

In my project folder I have .res files, I guess I didn't send them all to you! and about simulation years, I corrected them, (because I am working on different time scenarios, I forgot to change some of them.)

My SWATCUP version is 5.1.6.2, it is the same version with SWAT website. (http://swat.tamu.edu/). Could you please let me know what the latest version is?

I really appreciate your help!

All swat versions have the same output.rsv file, so it is not swat version. The problem is inconsistencies in your input files. Check them carefully. The program runs in my machine.

Dr. Abbaspour

As you said, the problem is in my input file.

In my model there are 3 Reservoirs, but we just want to consider two of them! So for ignoring one dam, we changed IYRES of the dam to 2050! When I changed 2050 to sometime before simulation period, the problem solved.

Thank you so much, and sorry for taking your time!

Dear Dr. Karim
I'm starting work with sub daily data in SWAT, and now, I'm starting the calibration process.
I saw this topic, and I couldn't find the SWAT_CUP_Hourly_Differences.7z
It's still available?

Best regards, Tássia.

Dear Dr. Abbaspour,

When I use the swat-cup to do calibration and validation of rainfall-runoff simulation under sub-daily time step, the observed flow data must be as the same timestep as the rainfall data? Can I use the daily observed flow data to calibrate the hourly rainfall-runoff simulation? If it is workable, what’s the different between sub-daily and daily in cup?

Thanks in advanced.

Dear Dr.Karim and SWAT CUP users,
The link ftp://ftp.eawag.ch/outgoing/abbaspou posted above does not work with me. Has there been any change since then about the link above. I need to calibrate an hourly SWAT model by using SWAT CUP SUFI2.
Thank you very much for your support.
Best,
Nabil

The site is OK. Copy that path in the “Start” window “search programs and files”

Dear Dr.Karim,

Regarding to the use of SWAT CUP for sub daily SWAT model calibration, I read in your documents that SUFI2 extract has to be included in the SWAT CUP folder, and has to be included in the text of the Sufi2_Extract.bat. I copied the following files into SWAT CUP folder (my SWAT CUP project folder):

SUFI2_95ppu   ((CHANGETOEXE) File)

SUFI2_95ppu_beh   ((CHANGETOEXE) File)

SUFI2_extract_rch_hrly   ((CHANGETOEXE) File)

SUFI2_extract_rch_hrly   (DEF file)

SUFI2_goal_fn   ((CHANGETOEXE) File)

It did not work. These files did not appear in SWAT CUP window as shown below:

Can you help with that? Should the type of these files be changed to an application file? If so, how can I do that?

Sorry to bother you by these questions!

And thank you very much for your support

Nabil

Hi Dr Abbaspour

Are these files still available? The link seems to not be working, even when I copy it into the start window.

Many thanks

Dear all,

Can these hourly extract files also be used for the hourly sediment calibration?
I have tried the hourly streamflow calibration. The files work well for hourly streamflow and, now, I am trying for the hourly sediment calibration.
I modified the extract_rch_hrly.def as attached, but, it keeps giving me the error for no output for flow. However, it has the output for sediment.
Since there is no output for flow and hence there are no other results except the sediment output file in the Sufi2.out.

If someone has experience with hourly sediment calibration, please kindly share with me.

Thank you in advance.

Best regards,
Nang
