Hi Lewisboro sustainability people - I have a small request. We need a bunch of people to call or email Pete Harckham's office this week to ask for his support of the data center moratorium bill. As you may have heard, huge data centers are cropping up all over, and are wreaking havoc on the environment. They are gobbling up large amounts of electricity which may raise electric rates for everyone nearby, polluting the air with temporary diesel generators, using lots of water that may negatively impact the local water supply, generating noise 24/7 that can irritate the local neighbors, etc.
There are active bills in the NY legislature calling for a temporary pause on building new data centers. Chris Burdick has already signed on to the bill in the Assembly. We need to get our state Senator Pete Harckham on board to sign on to this bill in the Senate. The bill would do 3 things: create a 3 year moratorium on any new large (over 20MW) data center proposed to be built in NY use that time to review data centers' impacts on the electric grid, water supply, air quality, and more develop guidelines that new data centers will need to adhere to in NY
If you support this, please call
(518.455.2340) or email (
harc...@nysenate.gov) Pete Harckham's office and ask him to support the Data Center Moratorium bill - S9144. When calling, you will either leave a message with a staff person, or voicemail. The current legislative session ends on June 4th, so if you can reach out in this week, that would be terrific. We need to try to get this bill passed now, and having more constituents voicing their support will certainly help. Let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you!
