We Launched Active Travel Corridors in May. Here's how it went...

In May, The City of Corvallis Active Transportation Group launched the Active Travel Corridors (ATC) mapping project. We asked you to help us develop where our neighborhood shortcuts were located that allow for people to walk, roll and bike to connect to other streets and locations.

 

We asked for ATCs, you mapped them!

 

In total, 95 ATCs were identified with an impressive 6 miles worth of connections put down for all to see. The breakdown of locations looked like this:

·         NW = 21

·         NE = 17

·         SW = 25

·         SE = 17

·         Central/Downtown = 15

What is truly remarkable is that this confirms what many already knew—a robust and built network quietly parallels traditional paths we use to get around by walking and biking. They allow neighbors to easily access parks that otherwise require walking much further out of the way. They provide kids a superhighway so they can to get to friends’ houses without crossing major streets. And they create places of interest, secrecy and beauty in plain sight by giving people the gift of a welcoming way to access an area that is exclusive to non-motorized travel. 

 

The ATC network is a living entity and we still aren’t certain that all of Corvallis’ ATCs have made it onto the map. Knowing this we have decided to keep the online mapping tool alive and interactive for the foreseeable future.

 

Moving beyond the launch, the future of ATCs are bright. We’ve got plans and are excited to share them with you as they develop.
