Replacement book. Tyrant:Shakespeare on Politics

Folks,

It appears that my recent nomination of Shakespeare’s Freedom lacks an audible version. So I am replacing that nomination with yet another book by Stephen Greenblatt called Tyrant:Shakespeare on Politics.

For those who think we live in uniquely parlous times, this book will serve as a salutary correction. Shakespeare provided us with a goodly number of sociopathic authoritarians and tyrants. His study of how a society can tolerate tyranny (and even exalt the tyrant) is insightful. The Elizabethan era in England was a remarkably turbulent time, with enmity between Protestants and Catholics, and with the ever looming threat of foreign intrigues. Turns out that politics never really changes much.
