 APS November and December Events
The Metaphysics of Quantum Mechanics: From Spooky Action at a Distance to Higher Dimensions to Many Worlds
Benjamin Franklin Hall and Livestream
Thurs., Nov 6, 2025, 6:00PM ET
Told through the lives of three remarkable artists devoted to the pursuit of liberty, an illuminating new history of the ideals that fired the American Revolution.

Join us to meet Dr. Alyssa Ney, the 2025 Suppes Prize Winner, as she discusses the metaphysics of quantum mechanics.

Is there a way to accept the startling experimental results supporting quantum mechanics while denying spooky action at a distance? Indeed there are several ways to do so. This presentation will discuss proposals involving a higher dimensional wave function as well as parallel universes or many worlds.

This event is free to attend but registration is required. Note: registration is limited.
On Experimentation, Air, and Human Health:
Considering Priestley’s Scientific Legacies

Scripps Research Institute, San Diego, and Livestream
Tues., Nov 11, 2025, 4:00PM PT
Join the American Philosophical Society and Scripps Research Institute in San Diego for a public conversation with atmospheric chemist Dr. Kimberly A. Prather (APS 2022) on how early observations about the “air” continue to inform scientific understanding of the interrelationship between climate and human health.

Dr. Prather is Distinguished Chair in Atmospheric Chemistry and a Distinguished Professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UC San Diego.
Memory Wars: Settlers and Natives Remember Washington’s Sullivan Expedition of 1779
Benjamin Franklin Hall and Livestream

Join us for a Lunch at the Library presentation from A. Lynn Smith who will be discussing her book: Memory Wars: Settlers and Natives Remember Washington’s Sullivan Expedition of 1779.

Dr. A. Lynn Smith is a historical anthropologist whose research explores settler colonialism and social memory. Her new book, Memory Wars: Settlers and Natives Remember Washington’s Sullivan Expedition of 1779, contrasts the public history of a Revolutionary War expedition with its narration at Haudenosaunee cultural centers in central New York.
