Certificate for Juryo 13W Hakuyouzan: "He is expected to require approximately six months of treatment due to a ruptured right Achilles tendon." He underwent surgery on June 18th and is almost certain to be demoted to Makushita for the next basho.

The Kyokai released the medical certificate for Sekiwake Wakatakakage, the yusho winner of the last basho, dated the 7th, stating that he "requires two months of treatment and rest due to traumatic compartment syndrome in the left thigh. However, this may change depending on the future progression of his condition." This is the first time a tournament winner has been absent from the first day of the following tournament since Yokozuna Terunofuji, who won the Nagoya basho two years ago and then withdrew from Aki basho.
