The 79th All- Japan one day tournament was held after a three year hiatus. winner- Houshouryuu, who beat heyamate Meisei in the finals with a last-minute kotenage after being pushed to the edge. 32 Makuuchi rikishi took part. "I train with him every day. He's become very strong, so i was looking forward to going all out. I'm really happy,' he said. In October 2002 his uncle ex-Asashouryuu won the tournament (was an Ozeki at the time) for the first time and went on to win his first honbasho yusho a month. Upon hearing this he said he would gambarize as well.
