I'm having some trouble with my Mares Smart dive computer. It shuts off (screen goes blank, which is not normal - it's meant to always be in dive mode or watch mode) after only 20 seconds.

I press either button and get this message:

999 rSt
V0:05
SAMPLE

Then if I press a button again or wait 15 seconds it shows the time in watch mode as 14:30. There I can scroll through all the menu options like normal or access my logbook info. As long as I keep moving it stays on and seems to funtion as normal...

However it won't go into dive mode. I even turned it jn

Are you sure the battery is ok?

Lots of dive computers refuse to go into dive mode under low-battery
conditions, including the Mares Smart.

It should have a blinking battery icon at the bottom (and still
continue to work in surface mode), but the whole "turns off" behavior
might indicate that the battery is _so_ low that it just stops working
entirely.

I'm having the exact same problem. The computer is my dad's, and apparently it drowned, so it was left unused for years. I replaced the battery to a very used one and have almost the same data showing: xxx rst; V 0:05; nn,nnn; where the x'es represent varying numbers (I think it depends on time, somehow, since first I got 587, then 588, 589 and finally 592) and the n's represent a number.
I must ask, since its an old question. Did changing the battery solved the problem?

hm ....

I don't think it is a subsurface issue and I do not realy know the mares smart.
but the sceen you describe seems to be the info-screen and there should be a battery-symbol in the last line. if not, the battery is very bad and you should change it or maybe cleaning the contact could help - or both.
and be shure you just unscrew the two screws of the battery cover. detailed info is found in the manual (try google)😉
