Atomics Aquatics Cobalt 2 (C2) Dive computer - Version # 2.490/4
Subsurface software - 4.9.3
Windows PC - Version 10.0.18363 Build 18363
Subsurface logfile attached

Downloaded dives from the C2 back in Oct 2019 with no problems. Now it shows an error when trying to download from it.

I connect the C2 to the PC, enter the USB screen, then press the right button again to select start, the PC dings like it sees the connection. Subsurface errors after I attempt to download dives.

I've attached the Logfile and a screenshot of the error.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Here's what I've tried since the first post:

-Noticed I'm not getting the "connected" verification on screen when I get the audible alert on the PC that the Cobalt 2  has connected.

Tried different laptop - same result
tried different cables and adapters - same result
tried cleaning the pins using an alcohol pad and a toothpick - same result
Tried different USB port - same result
tried rearranging the order I connected/started the software - same result
And to top it off - I tried all these with my wife's identical C2 and got ..... the same result

Is this on Windows? Does the dive computer show up in the system device manager?

Yes, this is a Windows laptop. It shows up under other devices on SDM. I presently have plugged in both of our Cobalt 2's to see if either will connect. Neither will.

My Cobalt 2 unfortunately died, so I can no longer reproduce this...
IIRC the Cobalt is an ACM USB device and shouldn't need any additional drivers, and libusb should directly open it under Windows - but it's been so long, I'm not 100% sure anymore.

I wonder if any one of the other developers still has access to a Cobalt or Cobalt 2?

OK, so I found out if I put the C2 in "bootloader" mode it will show up on the desktop. So it is connecting.

Found the answer. I had not loaded the Atomic Dive log software onto either of the laptops I was using. After I did, the driver issue was resolved, the DC showed connected, and I was able to download right away. Thanks for your help!!

BTW, to be clear RonR on Scubaboard was also instrumental in resolving this issue - Scubaboard

On Windows every USB device needs a driver (except for USB HID devices).
To use libusb on Windows, the WinUSB (or the libusbK) driver needs to be
installed for the device. Nowadays the WinUSB driver is part of Windows.
Hence the "driver" is a simple inf file that tell Windows to use the
WinUSB driver. But it still needs to be "installed".

The Zadig tool can take care of this if you don't want to install the
Atomic application:

I have both a Cobalt 1 and 2.

Thanks for the info. I've already installed the Atomic software and all is working now. So whose responsibility would it be to notify the end user of this need for that driver? Atomic or Subsurface? Atomic installs it when you use their logbook software. How can a new cobalt user be made aware of this before spending all day troubleshooting it? Could Subsurface add the driver in it's install or at least a notification of it's need?

Read the Subsurface user manual, especially section 17.2. Taking into
account your version of Windows, what information would you like to be
included there?

Kind regards,

No technical writing experience but maybe in 17.1 the 2nd bullet point, some reference to what Jef posted earlier -

"On Windows every USB device needs a driver (except for USB HID devices).

installed for the device. Nowadays the WinUSB driver is part of Windows.

Maybe a popup window when the Cobalt DC is selected stating the need for the driver?
