Hi Everyone,

As the number of AI programs and use of AI increases, I was wondering if any of you are using AI to help with your work.  If you could please provide answers to the following questions, it would be greatly appreciated.

  1. If you are using AI programs, what ones are you using and what purpose do they serve?

  1. If you are not using them, why not?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

    California does use AI. There are many AI applications that California uses across state departments for different reasons. ChatGBT, Adobe AI features, law enforcement AI tools, AI in data processing and more. It wouldn’t be possible for us to report on all the AI tools California uses but they are readily available and accessed by staff across state departments. AI tools are allowed if they comply with state laws and department security policies. California is currently developing use policy around AI specifically.

    Montana does use AI as well. Similar to CA, we use many AI applications but we don’t use the free versions of generative AI since we can’t control what data is shared in the learning models. Mostly we are using out of the box products like Grammarly, Perplexity, and Co-pilot. We have also implemented document AI to parse supporting documents submitted by our customers to determine eligibility for military waivers using SnapApp. The use policy for generative AI on our state network does require completion of AI training and an attestation to ensure employees are aware of how their data may be used and what use is appropriate to ensure our state data remains secure.

    Thank you to those who let me know whether or not your state is utilizing any AI programs. If you did not yet respond, can you please let me know the answers to these questions:

    1. If you are using AI programs, what ones are you using and what purpose do they serve?

    1. If you are not using them, why not?

    Yes, I do! ChatGBT.
    I have used it to:
    • summarize reports and develop talking points;
    • summarize public comment into summary bullets,
    • "rephrase" something I have written to either shorten it or make it simpler. It can be useful for taking scientific terms into something that is more digestible by the public.
