I am looking for some large hooks to use with participants when I teach knot tying. The hooks don’t have to be sharp, I mainly need the shape.

Aside from bending a coat hanger into the shape does anyone have a recommendation or a link to some cheap oversized educational hooks?

Thank you,

If you just need the ‘eye’ use a lag screw (eye screw).

If you’re wanting a very large hook that’s great for the instructor to hold up and demonstrate, try this 19/0 shark hook.

Easton,
I do training for educators on low or no budgets, so I use sets of the cheap metal shower rings with braided clothesline rope or parachord. I can provide a classroom set for less than $5 and it all fits in a  Ziplock bag.

If you want to spend more money and want a more fun option, we swiped an idea from Nebraska that includes plastic fish used to make lures and key rings. They cost about $1 each.

Some naturalists I work with fashioned some pretty cool hooks out of heavy wire as well.

The shark hooks look cool, but they are bulky, heavy, and very sharp.

Note: If you are not a member of AREA, you should join - I am sure my aquatic ed. colleagues across the country have even more ideas - www.Areanet.org  (shameless plug :)

You can get eye bolts, that will work well for this purpose, at the hardware store for less than a dollar apiece.

New York also uses eye bolts and smooth braided rope for knot tying instruction. They’ve worked well for teaching the improved clinch and palomar knots.

One of our staff mentioned those cheap carabiners work well. We also have used big hooks like shark hooks that we dip the pointy parts in wax or flex paste but that isn’t always as cheap.  And some have made some from hangers.

I have a couple kits I purchased from Mark Stephens at Project F.I.S.H. He made them from plastic coat hangers and they work great!
