I have some files from extinct web pages made using the program that was all .gifs. They are transcriptions. Is there a way to extract text from the .gif files to create new pages?

Cheryl,

You might try this - https://www.hongkiat.com/blog/copy-image-text/  - I downloaded the 2nd choice and installed it.  Mixed results but was using a title page with odd fonts on it so didn't get what one would like.

Back when I was working I discovered it’s near impossible to ‘extract’ text from a graphic image - whether gif, jpg, TIFF, etc... An image almost always loses that component that makes it editable...  I had some OCR software that did a little but I ended up wasting time so retyped the document to move on...

There is a $50 program called SnagIt that supposedly does it. It's the only thing I've found.

I tried print the image to pdf, then open the pdf in WordPerfect. It's normally excellent on pdfs, at least on normal pdfs, allows lots of manipulation, etc., but while I can do it I don't think the translation is accurate. So retyping would probably be faster than that.

FoxIt will open images and OCR the text.  I use it daily and am happy to help.

Thanks. I downloaded the trial version but it didn't do what I needed. After several hours trying various things I realized half the alphabet was missing from the documents available anyway.
