Is USGWarchives.net safe? Should we be concerned about securing those very important pages? Are there any other domains and websites we should be concerned about? Should we be doing something now to avoid an emergency situation?

The archives are safe. The Crosby's keep those records. But we maybe should start a conversation with them, how we could be jointly responsible or ,,?!?

I get messages saying the sites are not secure. People are warned not to continue to the sites. We need to have them updated to modern security and formatting. But my first concern is the safety of the domain. And any others.

Rebecca, I agree totally — the USGenWeb should begin conversations soon with the Crosby’s, who have been and are so helpful to Joy with the archives and to our USGenWeb project.

ALSO, The SDGenWeb state pages are at present working & still on another server that Joy Fisher owns. I was appointed by Joy in Dec 2021 as SD ASC. Joy also gave me then the LogIn access to the server that housed SDGenWeb, allowing me to do the Acting SC duties. Through these past few years, I have purchased a separate server, allowing more space & accessibility for the SD Adoptable counties. At present only the State Pages and one more county need to be moved to the new server, which will be happening during this present week. Joy has asked for help and is aware of the SDGenWeb status.

The pages are completely safe. You get messages because the Archives have not been set up to use https. As long as you use the correct address when going to the Archives, you shouldn't have any trouble.

I understand the https issue. A lot of people will not go to a website after receiving that message. The general tech advice is don't go so one can understand why they are reluctant.

When I said "safe" I was asking about the danger of loss of data with the loss of domain. And that isn't the only domain Joy has. Domains are not high on her list of things to worry about at this time. Been there, done that.

I agree with Rebecca and Linda. The reason why Cheryl Rothwell noted
security warnings is that Archives pages are insecure http pages, not
secure https pages.

I would be glad to offer what help I can to the the Crosbys make the
transition to https.

I would also note that the Archives pages which I have looked at are not
mobile-friendly. That is a much more difficult problem to correct, and
one that I am still working on in my domains.

The Special Projects do not have elections for their project leaders. Their project leaders, in essence, own responsibility for the project.

We should focus on what we can control - the hosting of our state and county projects.  For now, we need to trust in Joy and the Crosbys to take care of the Archives and hope they will reach out to us if there is an issue or they need help.
