Dear Council,

I have been thinking how can we bring new players/writers to ST Borderlands.

As far as I can see, Borderlands has three active DSs: S'Task, Cromwell, and Prodigy.

Playing as Romulans or DFA is great fun, but most Star Trek fans are naturally drawn to the Federation and its iconic ships — like the Enterprise, Discovery, or Cerritos.

One idea to attract new players is to launch a DS inspired by one of these famous ships. A strong possibility would be the new Enterprise-G, which was already featured during the Flag Tour with Seven of Nine as its captain. We could introduce this DS with a transition of command — from Seven to our next captain.

My suggestion is that Piper assumes command of the Enterprise-G. He will soon be promoted to Captain, and every Captain deserves a ship. Piper could keep Banner on Prodigy while bringing in a new PC to lead the Enterprise-G.

If we go this way, we might use AI to create a couple of recruiting videos about this new DS and the existing ones.

Is this dreaming too big?

Sounds good to me

I think Piper would make an excellent Captain for a new DS

We abandon our founding concept and introduce AI into a creative writing group?

How will this new plan be shared? What is the marketing plan? Who are we reaching out to? What are we offering?

I’m not certain that adding AI will be beneficial in this, and I’m a bit nonplussed at trying to shift away from the Delta Quadrant as a setting when, as I understand it, that’s what this group was always about: new life and new civs. That being said, Piper would make an excellent DS leader if he was willing to step up for that!

This was a brainstorm, Richard.

I suggested using AI to create videos for recruiting not replacing our writing.

Maybe we could even use scene from our DS to ilustre this videos.

I understood Drika's Suggestion as using AI created videos as a recruitment tool, not as (Supplemental) writers.  (Intriguing idea, one I have been playing around in my mind, having players enter a holodeck, and letting AI control the holodeck and see what developed.  With ethical concerns, I have not run this, but it could be interesting.)

In today's world, visuals override the written word.  It could entice writers to participate, as the players decide which scene is next to be produced.  These are skills beyond what I can do, but AI as an assisting tool may not be a bad idea for the group.

I think Drika's Idea of creating a DS that is Federation would be an excellent idea for Borderlands and would support it.  I would also support anyone in that command position.

I have a couple of thoughts on this… so I wrote an essay lol.

Piper:
Piper can run a DS. He has ran Prodigy perfectly in my absence several times. But just because you can do something doesn’t mean you want to. GMing is very hard work, as we all know, and Prodigy’s command them already GMs as a collective. Piper has also expressed to me in the past that he has no desire to run his own DS. I think this is something that should have been discussed with him in private before coming to a public forum. Piper, if you do want to do this, you have my support 1000% and I will help in any way you can but I think we should make it perfectly clear that you do not have to and Banor’s promotion will not be affected by this decision.

The Actual DS:
I’m not opposed to it and I would not vote against it, however, I don’t really think it’ll work. It’s a good idea but honestly, we are stretched so thin, I don’t think we’d be able to find the players to do this and if we do, it will be taking away writing from the 3 active DS. Personally I think we should be prioritising protecting what we have over making anything new right now. That being said, if Piper, Drika, Dev or anyone else is taking on this project, you have my support and I’ll do what I can to help.

AI:
Bit of a complicated response to this. I think AI is cool and I use it to make pictures of my characters, NPCs on Prodigy etc. however as Dev saidthere are valid ethical and environmental concerns about AI. The environmental concerns are complicated but the nutshell is, the servers use a TON of power and right now it isn’t renewable energy. It’s a controversial topic, so using it for advertising could backfire and put people off. Could go either way really depending on the audience.

I do like Dev’s holodeck idea though, the “AI has taken over the holodeck” ran by an actual AI is a really cool idea. You’d have to experiment with putting posts into ChatGPT and testing if it could do it. Id recommend getting consent from all your writers though since not everyone is okay with ChatGPT reading their work. If you want to do this as a joint this with Prodigy, we could do it for Christmas.

Setting:
Actually have a question on this. So it’s based on the Enterprise-G, would it be set in the alpha quadrant, or would it be in the delta quadrant with the rest of BL?

Conclusion:
I don’t love this idea but I don’t hate it either. If it comes into fruition, I’m happy to help out with websites and stuff but probably couldn’t play on another DS at this time.

Good morning council.

While I am honored you are trying to auction me off to pioneer a new DS, I would like to remind you of three things.

1. The vote for my promotion has not even posted yet. I know there was discussion about timing etc., but that discussion has not moved since it's introduction.

2. I am not interested in my own command. Call it Riker Syndrome if you want, but I am more than happy to play small chair or another supporting role.
I have over a dozen characters spread between the three active DS'es and I am content with character generation as needed. Prime examples are the S'Hirt siblings, Duuuuude and his Entourage, and/or my various Marine teams. I identify a need (or have a role suggested to me), and I fill that need on a temporary basis (or sometimes semi permanent).

3. My availability has significantly changed, recently, and I do not think I could appropriately serve to command a new DS.

I am happy where I am and the roles I play. If, by accepting this nomination for promotion requires me to accept a command, I will gladly and respectfully decline the promotion.

Thank you for your time.

Lt. Col. Banor MarQ.
Executive Officer,
USS Prodigy.

Piper,
The promotion is separate from Command discussion.  Command DS was an idea to help borderlands as a whole.  I hope you take it as a compliment and not a requirement.  I have asked the council to move on your promotion, so hopefully we can get that under way.

What about something like Spacedock or the Sojourn's early production?

We have a still of our logo with an animated equalizer as our content is read aloud? It's semi-visual and represents our writing as more of an audio book? It /is/ added workload to record the audio, create the audio and video files--may be more work than any one can take on. But if we can develop that pipeline, it could give us a new medium long-term.

I and others have strong objections to AI. "AI narration" is an exception because it was largely developed before this influx of AI with Siri, Voices.com and other projects which take the phonetics of words as written and combine them with phoneme libraries.  The woman behind Siri's voice has said in interviews she had no idea Apple was her client and was floored hearing her voice everywhere. It's not like AI is consuming content to learn how a word sounds. And Audible calling it AI is jumping on the bandwagon for "AI" as a buzzword the same way every company used "Web 2.0". Most of the time, my own employer included, they use "AI" when it's really just a keyword search or Google-pioneered Markov word prediction.

-Richard.
