Hey guys! Apologies for the ghost, I added a new family member. As such, after thinking on my state of life, I've realized that trying to do intermediate is probably pushing it and taking one so close to the end of pregnancy was a mistake on my part since I don't have a lot of brain space (or time) for complex productions. It would probably be wise all around if I stuck with relatively easy books.

SO, I am proposing that I just continue with the Hardy Boys as they seem uncomplicated and I enjoy them; the next one in the series is Hardy Boy's #3: The Secret of the Old Mill (1927 edition): Wikipedia, IA, PG. ((but in #2 they alluded to breaking up a counterfeiting ring which is what this one is about...))

The original cover art should be fine as it's still Walter S. Roger's original paintings from the book's initial release (1927). I haven't been able to find a large version yet - biggest I've found is 647x1000; I'll keep looking. As for editing out the title and series name, I'll either need to get better with GIMP, find an AI program that could help me fill in, or ask for help again since I don't have anything fancy.

Happy to be back!

((PS. My husband's laptop had a breakdown, so I gave him my computer and now am using a good ol' Mac with iOS, so no more Nix funny business from me...))

Congrats!

I took the liberty to run this through gigapixel (4x AI art&cg upscale).

I'll see if I can quickly do something about the text.

Here's a version with the text removed. I did it with GIMP I hope it works:

Great! Thanks so much - appreciate it ^-^ Which tools did you use? Smudge and clone? I tried it with an AI tool, but it decimated the tree line :))

If you'd rather email me directly to stay on topic, feel free!

I have an extension pack installed into Gimp plugins called "resynthesizer" - https://github.com/bootchk/resynthesizer

I followed this basic process:
- select each character with the magic wand.
- use the 'grow' command to increase the selection size so it captures the entire character and then a little bit more.
- use the extension under Filters > Enhance > Heal Selection

Might need to play with the settings a bit (# pixels etc), but it does a pretty great job. Then a little bit of cleanup with the Heal tool and/or the Clone tool.

Gotcha! Thanks; I'll try to download that and try it next time!

1) Is there a space before missing letters when it comes right after a quotation mark? “ ’Lo…” vs “’Lo…”
2) Dixon makes use of single scare quote marks during a sentence with no dialogue; does that get switched to double quotes or leave as is?

I can manage.

The cover looks good, I'll add it to the DB.

1. Typogrify should take care of that, so whatever it does is fine.
2. Switch those to double quotes.

Does all right get modernized into alright in this instance? I thought maybe the split would be "all right" such as "all right with the world" and "alright" as an affirmative or verbal tick, but I thought I'd ask how or even if SE splits it as such.

"I'll see that he gets it safely all right."

To my knowledge we don't change all right/alright.

MW has a good explanation of the debate between alright and all right: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/all%20right

How about XYZ-room? Like living-room. We keep those hyphenated, right? I think I remember reading an explanation about it somewhere the last time I was here bc I ran into it but I cannot remember/find it now.

We generally don't manually replace hyphens with spaces, like in this case.

In general, we do not mess with compound words that modernize spelling doesn’t update. Whether they are dashes or spaces varies by time period, and sometimes by geography, and the hole is too big and too deep and cannot be filled in.

Okay! Thanks.

I know quotations are around new English words, so for this instance:

Both boys were wearing light “sneakers” that made little noise.

I'm not sure if sneakers were a new thing in 1927...? But it certainly isn't sarcasm or anything like that. Would I drop the quotes or just leave as is?

You can remove those quotes in an editorial commit.

I totally asked you a question on the issues request and then wasn't thinking and closed it! Whoops. I'm still interested in the response ^-^
