I have been trying out the se tools on The Murders in Praed Street by John Rhode, starting from the Project Gutenberg version

https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/72926

and using a scan from Google Books

https://books.googleusercontent.com/books/content?req=AKW5QaeRBJa7LpzUGqR-oo1VSQHFfedE2kkysn-Y9udLefpZcX9eM_ESOUB0GoVZv-xFXi5FZraKG3S_vsiP69Beej1tpZ5o8lyQ9V0G3bcZHC-Fmordt_XtsCSijVSo8Lu1TP6pwbjBvqsf3e0zlMCnwJjKNGaQpAgFwnZQ59Apd_PqNSBtc0C0Fx6LrPjoScLihlHb5cXbY5Yfizy_JpCuvduIuGm7Y1uy2y1fpdhNk5JMgqm0JvOIe4oHu6RvKMe1T8f0PPIPj7XyNkmbuRJdBX-JlO2IVA

The Gutenberg source seems quite clean so I can probably put a first draft on Github within the week, if you are interested.

Great, that one would be a good start.

You could use the first edition cover at PG as the SE cover. However
you'll have to trim the white scanner artifacts at the edges, and use
GIMP or photoshop to remove the title/author name.

The book is divided into parts, see the manual for how to structure that.

Otherwise, should be pretty straightforward.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

This page on common issues in older books may be useful:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/how-tos/common-issues-when-working-on-public-domain-ebooks

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can mark you as having started.

Have fun! :)

For the cover I propose

rather than the original cover

While I like the original image, most of the detail is in the bottom quarter, where it will be obscured by the title block.

The painting of the pharmacist is appropriate to the plot, it works well with the standard layout, and it will come to seem suitably sinister as the story develops.

An alternative is to crop the original cover image to enlarge the space at the bottom for the title and to remove much of the empty space in the top half, something like the attached example.

I don't have a strong opinion; you'd need to touch up the first edition jacket if you end up using it but I think your crop looks fine.

Alex, do you have an opinion?

If I might weigh in a bit, I suggest that using the first edition jacket is best because that artwork could only reasonably be used with this book (otherwise it would be confusing). Using the first edition jacket "saves" the more generic artwork for future productions.

I agree. Though I do see tnp's point that details would be obscured by
the title box. Maybe if you crop it tighter it would work? Try playing
around with it a little first without spending time removing the
title/author, to get an idea of how it might look.

I did experiment with cropping the original image, as in the example attached to my previous post. Perhaps you are suggesting that an even tighter cropping would work better? I can try cropping another ~10% from the right to reveal more of the cyclist in the foreground, but the more it's cropped the more the perspective seems wrong (as if viewed through a very long lens).

Can you clarify the notion of "generic" here? Is the policy that a book's original (first edition) cover art cannot be used for any other book? Or is this original cover, after retouching to remove the title, still less "generic" in some way?

Sorry I missed the attachment.

I think the cropped first edition cover looks good. It will also be much
easier to remove the title since only a small portion of it remains in
the viewport. So let's use that one.

Some questions:

Is there any particular markup or style for a displayed newspaper headline? (chap. 5 last line)

phial -> vial ? (chap. 12)

The Books apps for MacOS and iOS seem to have trouble formatting entries in the popup contents list for chapter titles that contain markup such as <abbr>.
Is it worth removing such markup from the toc file, or maybe from the individual chapter titles, to avoid this bug?

I’ll leave the question for your manager, but I use Books exclusively for reading epubs (SE and non-SE), and I’ve never encountered a problem with the popup ToC re abbreviations, spans (for roman numerals), etc.

Are you on iOS 26 and/or Tahoe? If so, it’s a new bug, and you should report it to Apple.
If not, you’ll need to provide more specifics: what version of iOS and/or MacOS, what book, what specific entry in the ToC, a screen shot of what you see that’s incorrect, etc.

An example from Books 7.6 on macOS 15.7:
books-app-contents-list.png
The marked-up roman numeral II and the Dr. are rendered without surrounding spaces. Same on iOS 18.7.1. For an example in a published book have a look at The Dain Curse.

Interesting. It appears Apple introduced the bug in Sequoia/iOS 18. I’m on MacOS 14 Sonoma, where it displays fine, but it’s wrong on iOS 18/Sequoia. It’s still a bug, AFAIK, so you should still report it to Apple.

I've updated build to remove them for the compatible build.

As it happens, there's a pretty good alternate version of the first edition cover from a bookseller on Abebooks. Perhaps worth a look? but possilbly not a huge step up from the one already in the DB.

FWIW!

Thank you. I'll crop it and compare with the current image.

I also like the blurb on the facing page. Is that suitable for the description metadata?

I reported through the Feedback app but didn't see any link to track the issue. I'll post here again if I see that it has been fixed.

To answer your other questions:

There's no special markup or formatting for newspaper headlines. You can style them as they appear in the scans.

As for phial->vial, I'm not sure. MW doesn't say anything about phial being archaic, on the other hand Google ngrams seems to suggest that it's falling out of favour. If we do update it, we'd have to update the entire corpus, and there's a lot of hits. I would say leave it for now, but Alex can always overrule if he thinks otherwise.

You should write your own blurb, don't reuse one.
