Hello!

I am interested in trying my hand at a first project for Standard Ebooks.
If approved, I would like to work on The Adventures of Sally by P.G. Wodehouse.
This title is listed on the Wanted Ebooks list as a good first production choice, and I have a soft spot for Wodehouse, so this felt like the right choice.

I plan to use the HTML version of the book listed here (per the link on the Wanted Ebooks page): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/7464

The scans I intend to use, from the 1923 publication, are here: https://archive.org/details/bwb_KP-509-748

I am not sure how long this will take me, as have a full time job and a toddler, but I'm excited to get started!
I am a software engineer by day, which should help, but I haven't done any engineering work on a Mac in years, despite having one for my personal machine.

I love using Standard Ebooks and hope contributing in this way is something that is a good fit.

Thank you!
Best,
Katie

Great, that one would be a good start.

The PG transcription has removed formatting including italics. You'll
have to look at each page of the page scans to restore italics (see for
example page 21 where there is an italicized I). Each chapter has
subchapters which are numbered in the transcription, but without
formatting, so you'll have to add sub-sections and a new <h#> level for
those.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

This page on common issues in older books may be useful:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/how-tos/common-issues-when-working-on-public-domain-ebooks

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can assign you a manager and reviewer.

Have fun! :)

Thanks, Alex!

I appreciate the detail about the italics. I’ll make sure to be vigilant about that piece when I get that far.

I'll be sure to go through the documentation and ask questions when I come upon something I can't figure out.

Here is my GitHub repository with its first commit: https://github.com/katiearina/p-g-wodehouse_the-adventures-of-sally

Thank you!
Best,
Katie

Hello!

Getting into the semantics pieces and have some questions.
I have some things in the text that might be considered "initials", but they are all singular -- e.g. a telegram that says "Remember. Death to the Family. S." (where S is Sally) and also a sentence that ends with "[...] it’s the best thing that has ever happened to Brother F." (where F is Fillmore)
Do I use the <abbr epub:type="z3998:given-name"> tag for these? I would err on the side of yes, but they aren't obvious initials in the traditional sense so wanted some guidance.

Another semantics question, this time about all caps: there's a letter referenced that says "“Always your pal, wherever I am.—SALLY.”" -- would you treat the SALLY as a <b> tag for unsemantic formatting required by the text? I did verify that "SALLY" is in all caps in the original scans.

Thank you in advance!
Best,
Katie

1. Yes, these should be tagged with <abbr epub:type="z3998:given-name">.

2. All cap names are never correct. Convert `SALLY` to `Sally` and tag it with <b epub:type="z3998:sender z3998:signature"> (SEMoS 7.7.4.4 and the letter examples).

Thank you, Emma!
Sorry for the delay in response, life got away from me.
I have made those updates and am sure I will be referencing the letter examples frequently, since there are many of them tucked in here.

There are two other items in the text in all caps and I'm wondering how you would handle them:
The first is a theater poster (p. 125 in the archive.org scan) that says "Fillmore Nicholas presents" but in the book is stylized as:
FILLMORE NICHOLAS
PRESENTS

My best guess at this would be:
<b>Fillmore Nicholas<br/>
presents</b>

The other one is on p. 310 in the archive.org scan and is stylized as:
POPP'S
OUTSTANDING
PORK-PIES
SUCCULENT⸺APPETIZING⸺NUTRITIOUS.
(JUST SAY “POP!” A CHILD
CAN DO IT.)

The text calls this a cipher, though it appears to be more of an acrostic.
My guess at this one would be something like:
<b>Popp's<br/>
Outstanding<br/>
Pork-Pies<br/>
Succulent⸺appetizing⸺nutritious.<br/>
(Just say “Pop!” A child can do it.)</b>

I don't feel sure about the capitalization of appetizing and nutritious here, but tried to do normal sentence-casing for the parenthetical (which may be incorrect, so guidance would be appreciated).
I'm also not sure if the line break is stylistic at the end of "A child" or just done to be centered on the page, so there could be a <br/> after "child" but it doesn't seem as stylistically relevant as the others to me, so I'd err on the side of leaving that out.

I'm sure there will be more questions soon enough, but I'm working on the hunt for italicized words now to at least get the majority of those accounted for.
Thank you in advance for your help with these!
Best,
Katie

1. For page 125,  I would structure it like:

<blockquote>
<p><b>Fillmore Nicholas</b><br/>
presents</p>
</blockquote>

You can then style it so that the whole blockquote is in small caps, and you can also target the <b> element and style it with `font-size: larger;`.

2. The structure looks good. Make sure it is a <blockquote> element. Since this is considered a cipher, I recommend styling this with `font-variant-caps: all-small-caps;`.

If you need more specific instructions on how to format the custom CSS let me know.

Hey Emma!
Thank you so much!

The only question I have about the custom CSS is if there is a best practice for how it is done for SE.
I am familiar with CSS in general, but am not finding the details for the specific preference here (I might be missing it, but tried searching in the guide and repo and also cross-referencing other books' local.css files, but could not determine a consistent pattern in them).

Basically, is it okay to add a class or ID (e.g. a "poster" class/ID or a "cipher" class/ID) to pinpoint the spot where the formatting is needed, or should it be derived from the existing ID and class combinations in the text as a CSS selector?

Thank you again and appreciate all the guidance and how quick you are to reply!
Best,
Katie

Classes are not used as one-time style hooks (SEMoS 1.1.7.4.1). Since theses are one-offs, target the file id and the specific <blockquote> the text appears in.

Hello!
Been working away on italics as I have time over the holidays and landed on a few things that I wanted some feedback on:
  1. First, the line "the telegram ran:" after the specified telegram.
Should I leave the colon as-is? It's not a stylization I've seen before so I wasn't sure if there was a convention around this:TAoS-p158.png
  2. Where in the text the play name ("The Primrose Way") is specified, I've removed the quotation marks and subbed in the <i epub:type="se:name.publication.play"></i> tags around it, as that seems to be what is specified in 8.2.11.2
My question is around talk of The Primrose Way [play] Company.
The following two examples are in the book:
TAoS-PrimroseWaycompany.png
TAoS-PrimroseWayCompany2.png
Since neither of these are in quotation marks (e.g. "The Primrose Way" Company), and the "the" is lowercase, I have not added any italicization or type-marking to those two instances since they seem different than the other explicit references to the play by name.
However, I wanted to confirm that this is the correct instinct, and also ask about whether "company" or "Company" is correct, since to me there appears to be an inconsistency there. (I believe that would be an Editorial commit if a change is needed, so I may wait to actually make that until later, but wanted to square it away now if I can.)

Thank you in advance!
Happy holidays!
Best,
Katie

1. Leave the colon as-is.

2. You're correct; the name of a theater company shouldn't be in italics or quotes. You can standardize both instances to be "the Primrose Way Company" in an editorial commit.

Hello again!

A few more Wodehouse oddities that I want to confirm before checking in the next round of italicizations:

  1. TheaterShows.png
In this first one, asking about the italicization of both "Follies" and "Myrtle takes a Turkish Bath"
    • The latter seems to be the name of a fictional Broadway play, as the paragraph after it talks about seeing shows every night on Broadway, implying this is one of them (p. 269 for reference), so I feel like the correct tag here is <i epub:type="se:name.publication.play"> -- would appreciate confirmation that this seems accurate.
    • I am slightly on the fence for Follies -- it seems the name of a Broadway show, but is it correct to also tag it as <i epub:type="se:name.publication.play">? It doesn't seem like a play, per se, but I didn't know if there was a more accurate tag for something like this.
(8.2.11.2 talks about things like operas and films, which seem closer in spirit but obviously not technically correct)

  2. Italian1.pngItalian2.png
In this second one, asking about use of <i xml:lang="it"> for these passages, when obviously many of the words are not actually Italian, but the implication in the text is that the listener is hearing them as if they were entirely Italian and they are italicized as such. Right now I have them all tagged as <i xml:lang="it"> but wanted to make sure that was the correct choice before checking them in.
(Bottom of p. 277 to top of p. 278 for reference)

Thank you in advance! Almost done hunting down the italics in the transcription (hopefully!)
Best,
Katie

Plays/shows are always in italics.

I think Italian semantics are fine for those passages, as presumably
they're at least meant to be read in some sort of Italian accent.

Hello!

I had a few questions after running se modernize-spelling .
  1. The first is "Tea-Pot" which it wants to change to "Teapot" -- given the context, "Tea-Pot" seems the correct choice:
    Tea-Pot.png
  2. The second is "pork-pies" which are referenced all over the place; the suggested replacement is "porkpies" but the book is talking about the actual food item, not the hat. I can see changing this to "pork pies" but am not sure if that is a valid replacement (and, if so, should it be made in an editorial commit?) or should this just be left as-is?
    pork-pies.png
  3. The last is "jiu-jitsu" which has a suggested replacement of "jiujitsu" -- I've never seen it spelled that way before and a Google seems to back that up. It is seemingly almost always referred to as "jiu-jitsu" in everything I've come across and even the Merriam-Webster entry for "jiujitsu" without the hyphen says it is the "less common spelling of jujitsu"
    jiu-jitsu.png
Screenshots of the scans for context, if that helps.
All of the other changes from se modernize-spelling . appear to be valid (even though "boardinghouse" looks wrong to me, it seems like it is a valid replacement and is used in other Wodehouse repos), but I wanted to get an additional set of eyes on the above three items before I move on to the spacing changes and the resulting commit.

Thank you!
Best,
Katie

1. It looks like there are some editions that change "Tea-Pot" to "Teapot" (example). Let's go with "Teapot".
2. You can leave as-is.
3. Use jiujitsu. It has a slightly different pronunciation than jujitsu.

Hello!

I wanted to email and check in just because I realized I missed something earlier in the process and didn't know if I can do a well-labeled commit now or if I need to start over (hopefully not, but if I need to I will!)

I realized when working on building the table of contents (step 20 in the step-by-step guide) that I should have added subchapters earlier in the process.
I had split the text into chapters in step 7 with a "Split files and clean" commit, and then later added subsection markup in step 14 with a "Manual semantics updates for subsections" commit (not every chapter has subsections, but many do), but did not realize those subsections should also be considered subchapters.

Is it okay to split out the subchapters now with a commit message of "Manual semantics updates for subchapters"? If not, how should this be handled?
Here are the rest of my commits up to this point, if it helps: https://github.com/katiearina/p-g-wodehouse_the-adventures-of-sally/commits/master/

Apologies for not realizing this earlier! I was aware of subchapters as a classification, but for whatever reason it did not dawn on me until some titles for the ToC were not generating correctly that these specific subsections were also subchapters. I then compared what I had to multiple other PG Wodehouse SE books and found that Leave it to Psmith has a similar structure, and here I am.

Thank you for your guidance!
Best,
Katie

(Not pivotal to the question, but I misspoke and wanted to note that I am actually on step 18 ("Set <title> elements"), not step 20, if that makes any difference. Thanks!)

So if I'm understanding this correctly, you are just trying to add <section> elements for the subchapters? That shouldn't be an issue. Just call it "Add section elements for subchapters".

Hello!

I have finished with proofreading and as I work on the final touches for The Adventures of Sally, I am now on the hunt for a cover image.
I thought I had found one in the Standard Ebooks Artwork Database, but then realized it had recently been selected for a different title.

I would love to be able to use Portrait of Winnie Melville, Mrs Derek Oldham by Philip de László, but the issue I am running into is requirement of a reproduction in a book prior to 1931.
However, it is referenced in de László's "Sitters' Book II, p. 14: Winnie Melville/March 16: 1920" (reference found under Literature here).
This "Sitters' Book II" does not have a reproduction of the painting itself, but instead has the signature of the woman who sat for the painting, including the date she sat.
I was able to find a scan of this "Sitter's Book II" here (PDF scan here) and on page 31 of the PDF, there is clearly Winnie Melville's signature with the date (3/16/1920).
WinnieMelvilleSignature19200316.png
There is also a small "1920" in the bottom left of the portrait that is visible on the linked image above.

I know the rules about Art and Images are very clear about the artwork being printed in a book, so I assume the above is not going to meet that criteria, but since I am having a hard time finding artwork that feels right, I wanted to be 100% sure that this is officially a "no" before moving on.

Thank you in advance for your consideration!
Best,
Katie

As you said, the rules are very clear. :) The painting itself has to be reproduced in a PD book.

Hello again!

Well, funnily enough, the image that brought me to consider de László in the first place does appear to meet the necessary criteria.

My updated suggestion for the cover art is Portrait of Doña María Mercedes de Alvear by Philip de László:

Please let me know if this would be acceptable for use as a cover.

Thanks again!
Best,
Katie

I added the painting to our art database, but Emma will formally approve it as your project manager.

Something I wanted to chime in with as advice for future research is that oftentimes, the "References" section on Wikimedia commons can be helpful for finding where a painting has been printed in public domain books. In this case, there is a reference to "(1 May 1927) Blanco y Negro, p. 26" and I was able to find where the painting was printed in the magazine. There are also several other portraits printed in this article so maybe you might find one of the other ones interesting.

Thank you, Weijia!

I saw that reference (although I was using the Christie’s site in addition to the de László-specific one so it’s good to know that information is also on Wikimedia!) but had a harder time finding the scans of it than the other reference I provided.

I will wait for Emma’s feedback.

Best,
Katie

I realize that I did not provide my reasoning for choosing this cover and it may have come across as a bit hasty (it wasn't), so I wanted to expound on my last message a bit.

When I first stumbled upon the Portrait of Doña María Mercedes de Alvear after looking at a lot of other artwork that did not fit, it was my first choice to suggest for the cover image.
The one small question I had in my mind was whether the image seemed too serious for the work (since Wodehouse is known for being quite comedic, and this book certainly follows suit). That was when I explored more of de László's portraiture and found the image of Winnie Melville, who seemed a bit more overtly impish and youthful.

However, this portrait of María Mercedes de Alvear does fit an image of Sally in my mind, and the subject has that enigmatic quality that I see embodied in Sally.

This is the most physical description we get of Sally in the book:
She was a small, trim, wisp of a girl with the tiniest hands and feet, the friendliest of smiles, and a dimple that came and went in the curve of her rounded chin. Her eyes, which disappeared when she laughed, which was often, were a bright hazel; her hair a soft mass of brown. She had, moreover, a manner, an air of distinction lacking in the majority of Mrs. Meecher’s guests. And she carried youth like a banner.

Sally is just over 21 years old in the narrative.
María Mercedes de Alvear was 25 years old when this image was painted, and has similar coloring and a decided air of distinction. The image was also painted the year before The Adventures of Sally was released (1921 vs 1922), so the hairstyle and clothing are very of-the-time compared to other images I was wading through.

Hopefully that helps explain this suggestion a bit better.

Thanks, as always, for your time and consideration!
Best,
Katie

Hello!

I just realized that in my excitement about finding a suitable cover, I skipped the mockup step.
Here is what is currently generated by cover.svg (though with the 2100 x 1400px version of the image):
SallyCover.png

I assume this is still approved, but I wanted to make sure I checked this specific box since it's my first time doing this.
I installed the two specified fonts but assume they'll appear at a later step, since all the other cover.svg files I looked at in the repo have the same font layout as this one when I open them.

Still working on finishing the post-proofreading check ins, but we're getting close!

Thanks!
Best,
Katie

The mock up looks good! The file that has the right font is found in the `src/epub/images/cover.svg` file.
