It's about that time of year to start planning to privately start
producing books that will be US-PD in 2023, so that we can have them
ready for release on Jan 1, 2023.

There's a lot of good material coming up. If you'd like to take a stab
at any of these, let me now so we can mark them off.

We'll need to see if they have transcriptions somewhere, and then if
there are page scans. Internet Archive may have page scans behind a
rental lock which is fine for now since they'll be unlocked at the new year.

OK great. For all of these make sure you can find transcriptions and
page scans early on. That was a problem in previous years, for example
Peter Wimsey #2 never got done because we couldn't find either. Same
with John Dos Passos.

IA already has a publicly available scan of San Luis Rey. I haven’t found a transcription yet, but worst case I’ll use the scans.

Gutenberg Australia has a transcription of Sir Percy Hits Back. I used them for a couple of other ones already. IA has a 1950 scan, but from the copyright page it looks like it might be OK to be PD next year. Google appears to have several 1927 copies, but of course they can’t be seen (or even searched) until after 1/1.

I still don’t see any scans of last year's Sayers.

Thanks! Typically we reserve PD year productions for established
producers, because they have to work in private. So we wouldn't be able
to be of much help for someone who hasn't worked on an ebook before.

Looks as though Unnatural Death is going to be out of bounds, too. According to this 1987 edition, the copyright was renewed in 1955:

That doesn't matter, it was published in 1927 therefore it will be US-PD
in 2023. That number takes renewals into account

Just make sure to confirm that the transcription is the same as the PD
scans you find.

Also, don't open a PR for this until Jan 1. Since it's copyrighted until

One I'd like to do is a collection of spy stories by Somerset Maugham, Ashenden: Or the British Agent. Do you think this could be a standalone production? The stories are all connected, and together they would be around 87,000 words.

There's a transcription on Faded Page. I found some scans on IA that show a 1927 copyright, but they also show several other renewal years up to 1951. If this can be a standalone production, are those scans acceptable?

Hard to say. Maugham has a huge short story corpus and they were
collected widely. This is probably closer to a PG Wodehouse situation
where we'd have to figure out what was collected where and how to divide
what he wrote by theme if necessary.

Yeah he definitely wrote a lot of short stories (I've read a lot of them). The Ashenden spy stories are unique in that they are about his work in intelligence during WW1. In that sense they don't overlap with with his other stories, and could be standalone production (like the Jeeves collection).

Maugham himself published "The Complete Short Stories of Somerset Maugham" in three volumes, but he acknowledges that there were some stories from when he was young that he decided not to include. If it's even possible to find scans of those stories would those be included in his corpus, given that he more or less disowned them? The general division of the three volumes is that Volumes 2 and 3 are set in the South Pacific, while Volume 1 is more scattered, but mostly set in England.

Eh, the way he decided to publish them is not of huge consequence - we
should instead look at his corpus ourselves and figure out if there are
themes across his stories, or if they're all or mostly just general
fiction, and how his collections overlap, and if that even matters. This
will require a spreadsheet. I don't want to be in the position of OK'ing
an independent spy collection only to later find out that there were
other spy stories or that some of those stories were collected elsewhere.

I’ve been looking at Arsène Lupin’s next book (The Girl With the Green Eyes in one translation) but unfortunately the English publishing record gets difficult at this point. There’s a single copy on archive.org, but it’s undated and impossible to verify PD status. And it’s unsure whether the following books ever had an contemporary English translation. I’ll keep on digging though.

Alex, having just done the THIRD book in the Lord Peter Wimsey series I started thinking again about the SECOND book, Clouds of Witness. We didn't go ahead with this because it seemed that the 1934 release of that book was the only one we could find page scans for, and the introduction indicated that changes had been made in that edition.

Faded Page have a transcription of Clouds of Winess, but it's of the 1934 edition, so if you give me the go-ahead I'll transcribe this 1927 edition myself. The transcription of Unnatural Death wasn't too hard to do.

I am having *major* trouble finding scans/transcriptions of the first Hardy Boys books anywhere - plus the 1950's editions can't be used as they were bowdlerized significantly by the publisher. There are new hardcover editions of the original 1927 text, but not cheap. I'll keep looking around libraries, but I might pick something else if that's okay, Alex.

You can use the 1927 copyright page edition, however you'd have to do it
in private again and we'd have to wait till Jan to release it.

If Faded Page has a transcription then the easiest thing to do would be
to simply use theirs as a base and do a page-by-page comparison
proofread. If there are any differences you can correct them that way.

That's fine. It's pretty common to not be able to find page scans of
these books that aren't PD yet so we can just shelve it for later.

I found a color version of the ad on ebay of all places and gigapixeled it. It's one of the few issues that *aren't* in google books' archives (they have June-Dec of 1925), but not the April issue.

I could not find the painting itself on any of the auction sites or other art sites. The signature of the artist is clear on the bottom right of the image, however.

I was wondering if there's an interest in Tombstone by Walter Noble Burns?

The IA scans are locked behind 'borrow' and are a slightly later edition than the Faded Page transcription, but are marked with an original copyright 1927 (republished 1929). I'd love to keep the photographs if possible as it's sort of a 'fiction/nonfiction/biography' mix.

I can do THE BIG FOUR, if no one has taken it already.

The Internet Archive has the Harper ebook, with a 1927 copyright on the text. I can't find another online transcription, but IA also has an EPUB version of the text to use as a starting point.

I'm looking for one more 1927 PD book to do.

Patrol by Philip MacDonald is (C) 1927. I found a very recent edition (2016) on Archive.org with a 1927 copyright date.

Let's hold off on any more for now - the idea is to get the big hits out
on day one, but remember that in just a month from now you can work on
all of these using our regular workflow. Otherwise it's much more
inconvenient to work on these books off-list.
