Can you remind me why we're calling it "Can such things be?" Was that
the original title of the compilation containing all of these stories?

I also want to confirm that we're not including any duplicates from
Soliders and Civilians here.

Yes, that's the original title of the compilation (released at least 4 times, in 4 'versions', from my count). It will include all the stories from the 'collected works' version of the 'Can Such Things Be?' compilation, plus 6 additional stories from the 1893 version of the collection which never made it into his Collected Works. None of the stories from the first collection (soldiers & civilians) will be included here.

I created a column called "SE Collection" that shows where the stories will go, on the 'short fiction' tab of the spreadsheet.

The final two collections then would be the 'Fantastic Fables' and the last general 'Short Fiction' collection.

Production Notes:

About half the transcriptions from gutenberg, which used an abridged collection, and most of the rest from ambrosebierce.org. Both sets of text match the Collected Works editions, I compared against OCR for each story. I transcribed ‘Bodies of the Dead’ myself from the second archive.org source as these stories weren’t included in the ‘collected works’ version of the collection.

Modernize Spelling gets a few things wrong, as does semanticate (non roman numeral).

Also, I wasn't 100% sure on the rules of adding z3998:place semantics to abbreviations of states, there are 4 instances, for "Mont.," "Ill.," "O.," and "Ky."

I included them, but can cut if preferred.

Ok, I had just left it as is because the recent Maupassant collection had 'sirup' unchanged.

I left it because: 1) there are several others in the corpus that have it, and 2) it’s listed separately in M-W as a “less common spelling,” not an archaic, etc.

Ok, I think this is ready for Alex. One thing we weren't sure of was whether "madroño" could be modernized to "madrone." I was of the opinion that it might not be a sound-alike (though I couldn't find an actual pronunciation for madroño anywhere) so it shouldn't be modernized.

Thanks. Also - after looking into it some, I think at 30k words, Fantastic Fables is probably too short for its own release, and could just go into the final omnibus.

I am heading to my local library in the next week to see about getting an interlibrary loan from a university library of the definitive bibliography that D. Shultz and S.T. Joshi put together.

Once I get a copy of the bibliography, I hopefully will be able to definitively identify anything left that I've missed in the spreadsheet. In particular, a large selection of his (very) short stories from Fun can be included too, and I already started to identify the scans for those.
