Hi!

As my next project I’d like to do Conrad’s third novel:

https://gutenberg.org/ebooks/17731

https://archive.org/details/niggernarcissus00conrgoog/mode/2up

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Nigger_of_the_%22Narcissus%22

Besides the preface (author’s note), there’s a pre-preface (“TO MY READERS IN AMERICA”). Do we keep this?

Also, how do I correctly use se create-draft since the title contains quotes? Can I omit the quotation marks from the title and later add them to content.opf and elsewhere? Or do I HTML-escape them?

Best,
Szymon

OK.

Yes I do think we should keep the 1914 American preface. Wikipedia says
the book was retitled to The Children of the Sea in the 1897 first
American edition due to the offensiveness of the title. In the 1914
American preface Conrad states it is being republished in America under
what he considers its "proper title". So, that is both insightful for
readers, and also solves our problem of what to title this book, since
Conrad himself tells us his preferred title, `The Nigger of the Narcissus`.

Do include the alternate title in the metadata though.

The quotes in the title are just here to indicate that the Narcissus is
the name of a ship. You can just remove them.

Also, this begs the question of whether Github will allow a repo with an
offensive word in it? Maybe you should email them first to ask?

Looks like there are some repos with the same name so I guess it should
be fine:

David,

I'm near a first build, but lint is throwing several of these errors:
Possible typo: three-em-dash obscuring an entire word, but not preceded by a space.
For example, in Chapter 1, the scans show this:
image.png

Do I add the space or change the dash? Here it looks like it might possibly be an obscured word but that is less evident in the other cases. I think it's more of a pause so I'm inclined to change the dash.

Best,
Szymon

It seems like to me that most of these 3-em cases are instances where SE wants a regular em-dash.

The one you give as an example looks (to me) like the sole exception. Here, I would add a space before the 3-em-dash.

For the rest, I would replace the 3-ems with regular em-dash, BUT! I haven't looked at them all closely. Context will decide which of the two it should be, so you'll need to take a close look at each in turn. But on a quick look (there aren't that many, I think), they look pretty clear.

Hope that helps! D.

Thanks David, that was very helpful!

I've finished proofreading and found this painting which I'd like to suggest for the cover:
https://www.getty.edu/art/collection/object/103QRX
It is CC0, hasn't been used by SE before, and fits thematically with the work (the man is dressed as a sailor).

Best,
Szymon
