Last year we got a lot of good traffic to SE because we had a few big
new PD books ready to go on Jan 1, like Great Gatsby.

I think it'd be a good idea to continue that tradition, and start
producing some of the big 2022-PD (i.e. published in 1926) ebooks now so
that they're ready to go in January.

Personally, I'd like to claim "The Sun Also Rises" by Hemingway. I'd
also like to claim "A Man Could Stand Up" as it's #3 in the Parade's End
series I worked on.

Here are some possible highlights:

Winnie The Pooh
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
Lud-in-the-Mist
Clouds of Witness
The Seven Pillars of Wisdom
The Three Hostages
The Charwoman's Shadow

See:
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/20640.Best_Books_of_1926
https://www.goodreads.com/book/popular_by_date/1926
https://pop-culture.us/Books/1926.php

Since these are still copyrighted until January, we cannot host them on
Github until then. That means they'll have to be produced privately on
your local computer and reviews will probably be conducted by zipping up
your repo and emailing it privately. Scans of first editions may not be
easy to find, but archive.org may have first edition scans under the
"borrow for 1 hour" system. Shouldn't be too big of a deal, though it
will certainly be inconvenient.

If anyone is interested please let me know what you'd like to work on
and we can get started.

I’ll take Roger Ackroyd. I might take another one, but I’ll let everyone else have first dibs.

There is this Wikipedia page as well:  1926 in literature - Wikipedia

I did not realize there is a book version of Metropolis, that's pretty cool.

That's a great list. For those of you considering working on this, note
that we're mainly interested in what might be "big hits" for January.
There will be plenty of time to work on other 1926 works next year, so
we shouldn't make this short project a personal wish list.

I think what falls under that category would be big name authors like
Faulkner, Willa Cather, Christie, etc., and famous series like Peter
Whimsey, Pimpernel, etc.

OK, go ahead and get started. It looks like Faded Page has a
transcription. As usual we do not want illustrations.

Really? I know we don’t usually, but Shepherd’s illustrations will SVG fine, have been present since the first version and every version since (excluding Disney attempts), and are iconic to the character.

We generally don't want decorative illustrations, that's the SE
approach. Probably the only exception we made was for Alice and honestly
I kind of regret allowing that.

Another possible addition is Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townsend Warner,
which is in the Guardian's 100 best novels set.

Roger that with no illustration; while I do agree they are kind of iconic I respect the general policy we have. We can always add them back in the future if SE has a change of policy

Honestly, though I did the hard work of preparing the Tenniel illustrations for Alice, I wouldn’t be offended if we decided to remove them: all illustrations within a free-flow ebook are a pain the neck when you are reading. Same goes for the H. R. Millar illustrations in Enchanted Castle.

Hi,

Having Pooh available on January 1 will be a good move.

Someone interested might also consider producing When We Were Very Young, also by Milne, PD since last year. It’s typical for Pooh, WWWVY, Now We Are Six (PD 2023), and The House at Pooh Corner (PD 2024) to be sold as a four-box set. I expect many people who come to SE for Pooh will subsequently look for WWWVY specifically. And furthering this as an an opportunity, my cursory searches found no ebooks of it, only IA/HT scans and worse, scam sites.

SE policy aside, I must agree that it’s very unfortunate to lose the illustrations. But, well, that’s the situation, I suppose.

I can do Faulkner's Soldier's Pay after I finish Sheckley, which should be soon.

Btw Hemingway might have enough stories now to make into a short fiction collection if somebody wants to take that on. These are the ones I know of:

- Three Stories & Ten Poems: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/59603
- In Our Time: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/61085 Some research might be required here because there are two editions: 1924 and 1925. PG only has 1924 which only has these short vignettes which might or might not fit into the collection. The 1925 edition, however, has a few new stories. Also might be worth researching why PG hasn't added these stories yet. Hemingway has multiple stories published in 1925 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Complete_Short_Stories_of_Ernest_Hemingway#Part_I:_First_Forty-Nine_Stories) but none of them are on PG so maybe I'm missing something
- And newly PD in 2022 is the novella The Torrents of Spring

Faded Page has a transcription of "Clouds of Witness" here: https://www.fadedpage.com/books/20081011/html.php but so far I've had no luck finding page scans of a pre-1927 book. What's the story if they did their transcription from a later edition?

Anyone interested in the Seven Pillars of Wisdom? These might be
acceptable scans:
https://archive.org/details/sevenpillarsofwi0000lawr_i0n2/page/n9/mode/2up

However the illustrations were scanned very poorly and might not come
out well. We may have to take the illustrations/maps from other scans.

PG depends on PGDP to do the transcriptions and sometimes they just take
a really long time. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes for example is extremely
popular, became PD this year, and PGDP still doesn't have a
transcription complete.

For Hemingway we'd have to put together a spreadsheet to see what we can
and can't include before we get started.

Yes, I was just waiting to see if anyone else wanted it.

I haven’t found any scans of Ackroyd anywhere. I already have an ePub of it, so I can get started, but without scans I can’t proof it. Google appears to have a first edition scan, but of course it isn’t viewable right now. I haven’t found anything on IA or HT.

OK, thanks — that’s new information to me, that we can use a later reprint if the original publication date is shown on the copyright page.

I’ll get to work on Clouds of Witness once I’m done with Framley Parsonage, within a couple of weeks.

How are everyone's selections coming along?

We still have about a month, but I do want to leave plenty of time for
reviewing them, and the holidays always slow things down.

I don't think I'm in a position to work on Clouds of Witness because we don't have 1926 scans as yet?

As you know, Soldiers' Pay is done (I'll respond to the review tomorrow, Alex)

I plan to get the Hemingway Short Fiction done as well but no promises. As you say, the holidays always slow things down.

Ackroyd is done except for the cover; I wasn’t successful the one instance I had some time to look for one.

I finished positioning the illustrations in Seven Pillars today. I have to go through and add alt descriptions for all of them, which given there are 125+, and that I really don’t know I’m doing with them, is going to take several days. I also have the long description to do. I haven’t proofed the first two-thirds against the first edition—it is proofed against the 1935 scans I started with, so if that doesn’t happen before 1/1, we’re OK, but I would like to proof it against the actual first edition.

Just a note that our full-page illustration CSS is still bad on iPad/Mac Books. About 10-15% of the picture bleeds to the next page, and then the caption is on the page after that, so one illustration is taking three pages. I know we don’t like to care about stuff like that, but it makes for a horrible reader experience with as many full-page illustrations (45+) as this has. If this is someone’s first experience with SE because they came looking for it, it’s going to be a bad first impression. (And slightly unfair, since we have so few books with illustrations.)

I didn’t end up finding any available scans or transcriptions to Lolly Willowes (one of those occasions when US PD is earlier than the rest of the world) so I put it to one side. But if it’s valued then I’ll give it another look.
