Compatible epub issues

Hi,

I just wanted to give you feedback on my reading experience using a Tolino Shine 3 reader.

I downloaded the files from your web site via Firefox to the PC and uploaded the files by connecting the Tolino to the PC and copying the files via Windows Explorer.

When first opening a compatible epub file I get a warning that this book contains multimedia content, which may lead to some non-specified errors. After confirming the warning, the book cover is visible maybe for a second, then the reader shows the title page. The cover will not be shown again, only in the book shelf view. There are no other issues while reading the book.

If I take one of your compatible epub files and convert it with calibre to epub 2 with default settings the multimedia warning is gone and the cover is shown as expected. Therefore, my impression is that your compatible version is using some non epub 2 capabilities, especially because I never had that issue with books from other sources.

When I try to open one of your advanced epub files, I get the same multimedia warning but after confirmation of this the reader crashes immediately.

Hi there, our compatible epub files are epub 3, a standard now 10 years
old. Perhaps the Tolino does not support epub 3? You should try
contacting them to ask, and to report these bugs directly to ask. This
definitely sounds like an ereader software problem.

Thanks for for clarifying this, in fact I would have expected compatible to be epub 2. But as you said, the standard is old enough that one can expect companies to support it. Unfortunately this is not the case for Tolino, they are still working on it ...

I’ve  made this mistake. even though i know the epubs are epub 3 I still make th mistake of assuming they are epub2 and the advanced epubs are epub3… mostly because I don’t actually know what the advanced epub is. 

What is it? Or better yet got any links where I could read up on it myself. And is it worth clarifying on the site?

The advanced ePub is literally what we build, but zipped. So things that typically aren’t supported in readers include advanced CSS selectors, SVG covers, MathML, etc etc.

Most people don't need to know what the advanced epub is, they just need
to know that they almost certainly shouldn't download it.

Apple Books does most things, but it doesn’t have support for SVG covers.

Books can’t handle them, I’ve tried a few times. It doesn’t display the cover, at least, and I don’t remember if there were problems with the actual book. (Maybe endnotes? I don’t remember.)

And, for the curious, I just checked Thorium Reader (which I'm using on MacOS Mojave), and it handles the "advanced epubs" from Std Ebooks beautifully.

Interesting. It doesn’t do popup endnotes, or handle bridgehead vertical spacing correctly, or have a way to lookup a word (that I could figure out), but overall a decent reader. Thanks, David.
