Hi,

I'd like to work on The Three Impostors by Arthur Machen for my first project. I found matching scans on The Internet Archive. It has been picked up before and I should be able to use the information from those threads.

Sure, that one would be a good start.

This appears to be a cursed production because it's been attempted a few
times but always abandoned. I see you've already reviewed past threads
on the book - you can use them as a guide, including gotchas to look out
for as you start this specific book. If you need particular help just ask.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can mark you as having started.

Have fun! :)

Robin, can you manage this with Vince reviewing?

Thanks! I still have some lint errors to fix and then a general proofreading to be done. I'll update here when it's ready for review. The repo is at

Hi,

I am mostly done with proofreading and had a few questions.

 1. create-draft pulled the source text from Project Gutenberg, and it has www.freeliterature.org for the transcriber homepage, but the link doesn't point to a homepage anymore. Should I remove the link from content.opf?
 2. I have removed ligatures from the main text, but there are some Latin phrases with ligatures in them. Should I retain them?
 3. There are newspaper headlines with the contents "Wholesale Lynching. Shocking Story.", with the second sentence in a smaller font than the first. I have put the sentences between p tags, all contained in a blockquote contained in a header (this was suggested in a previous thread). Is it OK if the font sizes are the same?

For the cover image, there's a painting by Goya (titled "Witches' Sabbath") that a previous volunteer had suggested. For reference, the book scan is at

https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_CAIEAAAAYAAJ/page/n99/mode/1up?view=theater

and the cropped image is reproduced below (this is slightly larger than the one the volunteer had proposed, but it looks better imo) at

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Francisco_de_Goya_y_Lucientes_-_Witches%27_Sabbath_(The_Great_He-Goat)_crop.jpg

GoyaDS.jpg

I found another work by Goya, also titled "Witches' Sabbath" (reproduced below) at https://www.wikiart.org/en/francisco-goya/witches-sabbath . I find this even more apt. Basically, the Witches' Sabbath comes up in the story "Novel of the white powder", where a bookish young man inadvertently gets hooked to a white powder, which turns out to be something used in the Witches' Sabbath. To me, the painting portrays this quite well. The wikiart link claims that it is in the public domain, but I couldn't find scans. It doesn't help that Goya seems to have at least three paintings which are all more or less named "Witches' Sabbath".

GoyaDS2.jpg

I'm OK with either, with a preference for the latter. Any tips for where I can find a scan for this one?

  1. Yes, you can just remove the homepage there.
  2. You can remove ligatures in English and Latin.
  3. Yep, we can keep the font sizes the same. Or at least, by default we do, we do have the option of additional styling if you think the text demands it. But typically for newspapers we’d go with the standard you’ve already seen.

For the cover art, we can’t go with just what Wikiart suggests is public domain unfortunately. It’s also at the edge of what will size up and still look good: the end cover art will be 1400x2100, and the Wikiart copy is 611x900. The best quality copy I could find is https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/castlevania/images/7/75/Witch_-_03.jpg; potentially someone here can do a Gigapixel upsize if you can find PD proof? Either way, the official title of work in Spanish is "El Conjuro o Las Brujas” which might yield some more results on Hathi / archive.org if you want to continue looking.

If you don’t then the first is also fine :)

Hi,

Thanks a lot for that info, Robin. I've made the changes. I've had some progress with the cover images

1. Witches' Sabbath or The Great He-Goat - this is the one the previous volunteer had suggested and you had okayed. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a hi-res scan with the resolution we are looking for.
2. El Conjuro o Las Brujas - this is the one I suggested. A print reproduction can be found at https://archive.org/details/goyaaccountofhis00calv_0/page/n483/mode/2up?view=theater . The best scan I could find is at https://museoteca.com/r/es/work/3248/goya_y_lucientes_francisco_de/el_conjuro_o_las_brujas/!/ . Unfortunately, the resolution is 1393X2000, so just a tiny bit smaller than what is required. Can we manage with this one?

I found some other paintings in case the ones above are not OK. They are all larger than the resolution required and are thematically connected to the novel.

3. Witches' Sabbath - print reproduction at https://archive.org/details/goyaaccountofhis00calv_0/page/n485/mode/2up?view=theater and good scans at (in order of preference, but please feel free to choose)
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Francisco_de_Goya_y_Lucientes_-_Witches_Sabbath_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GOYA_-_El_aquelarre_(Museo_L%C3%A1zaro_Galdiano,_Madrid,_1797-98).jpg
4. The Bewitched man - print reproduction at https://archive.org/details/goyaaccountofhis00calv_0/page/n481/mode/2up?view=theater and a good scan at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Francisco_de_Goya,_The_Bewitched_Man.JPG

Let me know what you think.

Ah, good, that PD proof is fine so we can go with number 2. That size is totally OK to resize up, and if you want to resize further and crop down a little to get a better cover then go for it.

Alex, thanks for the link. I generated the covers for both versions and I'll go with the one I found, it's a bit more lurid, just like the book!

I've followed all the steps in the guide and the proofreading is complete, with lint throwing just one error which I can't figure out using the SEMOS. The concerned part is (in chapter-7.xhtml)

<blockquote epub:type="z3998:letter">
<p>“The whole of the above is unfortunately strictly and entirely true. Your brother confessed all to me on that morning when I saw him in his room. My attention was first attracted to the bandaged hand, and I forced him to show it me. What I saw made me, a medical man of many years standing, grow sick with loathing; and the story I was forced to listen to was infinitely more frightful than I could have believed possible. It has tempted me to doubt the Eternal Goodness which can permit nature to offer such hideous possibilities; and if you had not with your own eyes seen the end, I should have said to you—disbelieve it all. I have not, I think, many more weeks to live, but you are young, and may forget all this.</p>
                   <footer>
                       <p epub:type="z3998:sender z3998:signature">“Joseph Haberden, <abbr epub:type="z3998:name-title">M.D.</abbr>”</p>
                   </footer>
  </blockquote>

and the error message (error code is c-019) is "Element with z3998:signature semantic, but without font-variant: small-caps; or font-style: italic;.".

Apart from this, everything seems to be working and it should be ready for review after fixing the error above.

Please use the cover source from Wikimedia; it's a much higher
resolution, which means it will scale up/down better, and it's not
artificially oversaturated like the museoteca scan. Thanks!

Nice job, Nagarjun—Machen loved those three-page paragraphs, didn't he? And I’ve never seen “dumbfoundered” before.
I created a couple of issues on GitHub with a few small things to take care of. One that is cumbersome but not too difficult is that the chapter files need to be renamed; the prologue should be prologue.xhtml, not chapter 1, which then impacts the following files as well. Just reply there if you have any questions or if there’s anything else I can help with.

Hi Vince,

Yes, quite a few long paragraphs in this book! I will get around to fixing them in a few days, if that's OK. A general question - should I make a separate commit for every point that you've made? Thanks!

Hard to say; just use the same commit discipline you would normally use, keeping in mind “single logical unit of work” per commit.

All right, Alex, I believe this is ready for you.

Hi Nagarjun, we ask that in the metadata/colophon the SE producer's name
either sounds like a full real name including last name, or is
anonymous. See https://standardebooks.org/manual/1.6.4/9-metadata#9.18.1

Can you update the repo to meet that requirement?

Hi,

I've added the full name to the metadata and colophon.

OK great. Everything looks good and I've gone ahead and released it.

Very good work, thanks! Solid production of a book that was probably on
the harder end of first productions.

If you'd like to work on another book, check out our wanted list for
moderate difficulty productions, or pitch something else to the mailing
list that might interest you.

Thanks! I had a lot of fun working on this and Robin, Vince and you were very helpful. For my next project, I'd like to work on Bel-Ami (which was my first project before this but I had to abandon last year) or the Huysmans book next. I'll create a new thread when I'm ready.

There was also a question I had about the section 8.2.8 in the manual, but I suppose I should create an issue for that?
