I’d like to work on At the Villa Rose by A. E. W. Mason for Standard Ebooks.
Can you confirm that it’s not already in progress and that there aren’t any preferred sources or editions I should use?
If it’s free, I’ll get started right away following the SE style and toolchain.

Unfortunately we can't use this because the scans have no printed
publication year. You have to find scans that have the publication year
printed inside, and not just in the record metadata.

There are three links for the same publication: from the Harvard University, University of Michigan and New York Public Library.
Alas, it seems like none of them is PD, since I can't download the whole book, only one page at a time.

If you can find color versions of the frontispiece or any other
illustrations inside, you could use those as a cover.
Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

Hello,
I've finished editing. I can't think of any more improvements on my part.
I was thinking of using this image from SE Public Domain Artworks as a cover image.
Seems fitting for this book, because the era is the same (painting from 1909, book from 1910), social status, deduced by clothing, also seems to match, and there's a scene from the beginning of the book that roughly resembles that gathering (the men sat at luncheon, talking about the fresh murder case).
Can you confirm if this is OK to use?

Vince may well be busy at the moment, so on the cover: in principle that image looks fine, and since it's in the SE artworks DB, is legit to use.
It looks like it could be difficult to crop, though. Could you post a mock-up of the cover? (Se SEMoS rules; there's also a helpful "how-to".) That will ensure that what you eventually commit to the repo will be good going forward.
Also, just looking in your repo now, I see you've included all the illustrations. Normally these "decorative" illustrations are just cut. I don't think we want to keep them, but perhaps Alex could confirm.
(I see you've also renamed the `cover.jpg` file for some reason? Well, that will probably come good once the proper cover has been committed.)

Hello David,
I'm attaching the cropped and a little upscaled image. I upscaled it a bit, because the original image's dimensions are 1602x2000 and we need 1400x2100. I kept the center of it, because the painting would look bad cropped otherwise. Also, there is room below for the title and author to be unobtrusive.

You'll need to be the judge of the "aesthetics" of it: it might be worth experimenting with the crop-frame shifted slightly to the right, so the standing figures come into the picture more ... but then that big "portrait" might seem off-kilter.... You can see what works best!
I've gone ahead and made the assignment in the artworks DB; I don't think Vince will mind.

Usually I mention this at the start, but the PG transcription did not
include them, so I didn't realize this book was illustrated at all.
Any image that is not crucial to the plot, like a map in a murder
mystery, should be cut.
