Dear Parishioners:
Tomorrow (February 18, 2026) is Ash Wednesday which marks the first day of the season of Lent.
The season of Lent spans 40 days: from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday, excluding Sundays. Sundays are always festival days in which we remember the resurrection of our Lord.
At this time of year it is customary to think of solemn preparation, self-examination, and repentance.
During Lent, we remember the time Jesus spent in the wilderness before beginning his ministry, some Christians adopt Lenten disciplines such as the giving up an item of food, taking on a prayer or devotional practice or simply setting aside time each day to be present with God or sacrificing them to do acts of charity.
The Lenten liturgy is characterized by solemnity and simplicity. The Gloria in excelsis and the word alleluia are omitted and will not return until the Great Vigil of Easter. The tone of the services become more reflective and lead us to go deeply into our relationship with God.
At times that relationship becomes neglected and this holy season gives us a time to regroup and regather spiritually in order to make our communion again with God Almighty in the holy sacrament.
A Lenten array of purple, a symbolic colour of penitence, is used during Lent.
