Hi all,
You are all artists or art adjacent people I care about that might consider tabling at a show like this in DC. I just want you all to stay away from this show- Ken is a total scam artist. He makes you pay for 3 weeks up front, has a hissy fit you try to share an expensive table without telling you IN ADVANCE that sharing would be an issue (only after you've paid him), the crowds are really uneven (some days they are packed but some are super dead) which wouldn't be a problem if he wasn't asking for 3 weeks UP FRONT. My third week I would have broke even but Covid hit. All I asked is if he could give me a week this time around to table since I already paid for it, he was incredibly rude. Please let DC area artists know that this is not a good show to table at. The emails are super slick, the event is not.
For ya'll in SSC, you can ask Kat, Aric, or Zack (Evil Lord Aric not organizer Aric) for their experiences. I just want the word out. Feel free to forward this to artists of kind in the area so they don't waste their time and $$$.

I would second being wary of shows run by this organizer - partly this is due to my experiences tabling in the Dupont Underground with a show lead by Ken. There seemed to be a great deal of miscommunication between him and the manager/owner of Dupont Underground, that culminated in a screaming match between the two of them in which the manager threatened to kick all us artists out. Combined with the cold, lack of volunteer staff to help us artists out if we had to run to the bathroom, and the paying for 3 in advance, these shows felt subject to the whims of whomever realized that there were artists underground, and felt unsafe from a physical (the cold, etc.) and social standpoint (the screaming match).
My other reason for hesitation is due to a series of messages I had with him right before lockdown; I've attached them below. I take the fact he didn't respect my "no thank you to in person shows, due to risk of illness" with grace as a bad sign.
I would not recommend working with Ken, since my experience wasn't as bad as Anna's, but it hit several red flags for me and generally did not feel like an environment I wanted to continue working in. If there are other people involved at Ken's hierarchical level organizing Art Rave, I'd suggest contacting them instead - but if he's the sole organizer, I don't think it's a good idea to join that show.

That's CRAZYBEANS. My name is so uncommon but in the comics world less so, strangely. I know at least two others. Aric McKeown and Aric... something, a guy in Hawaii doing comics or used to be.
