Hey neighbors,

With the lack of activity here, I've been thinking that it might make sense to shut down this mailing list and focus communication efforts on the regional-channels on Discord [1]. There's a lot of participation in both the "Pacific Northwest USA" and "North Idaho" channels specifically.

We've been regularly receiving some spam on this list, and I also had some push back initially on using Google Groups at all (which I honestly understand). Personally, I wouldn't mind having one less service to maintain if it's not actually providing benefit to our community.

Any strong opinions one way or the other?

Hello,

My apologies for going off topic on this thread, I'm new to this group and MeshCore / Meshtastic so my opinion on whether this group should be shut down isn't relevant.  I would like to introduce myself.  My name is Ryan Hodges, I have been learning about Meshtastic (and more recently MeshCore) for a while but only recently pulled the trigger on purchasing equipment.  I've installed Meshtastic on 3 devices just to start experimenting and I will be installing MeshCore on 3 other devices soon.

I found this group's website and I joined the Discord groups listed but I don't use Discord all that much. I tried searching for a "Spokane" specific facebook group but didn't find anything. I did find the Meshtastic Washington and Meshtastic North Idaho groups on FB so in an attempt to draw more "Spokane" specific people I created "Spokane MeshCore / Meshtastic"  https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1FisQ7kMT8/ . I am in no way trying to hijack any control or detract from SpokaneMeshNet. I would be more than willing to change the name and assign admin privileges to anyone wanting to help run the FB group, even possibly to merge it with SpokaneMeshNet. From experience I know there's a certain segment of people that don't want to have yet another app like Discord and would rather use FB.  I haven't publicized the new group I created to any of the other local groups on FB because I wanted to reach out to this group first to see if you might want to bring it under the SpokaneMeshNet umbrella.

I'm really looking forward to getting nodes setup here in Spokane and hopefully establishing a link between Spokane and Airway Heights, if there isn't one already, where I have a few friends out there as well.. I will be turning a few of my current nodes into solar nodes but I plan on purchasing more nodes as well specifically for the purpose of trying to link Airway Heights.

Do you guys ever have meetups?

Best Regards,

Ryan Hodges

Hey Ryan,

No worries, it's not off-topic at all. I think it's great that you've created a Facebook group for the area, and I'd be glad to update our site to point people to it. Any way we can engage with each other is a win in my book. I'm just doing what I can to advocate for MeshCore and it makes me happy to see the local mesh community grow!

We haven't had any meetups for the mesh in particular, but I do meet with a handful of fellow nerds on a weekly basis for a more general technology group called "Hacker Breakfast" [1]. It's not radio-centric, but a couple of other members do have mesh hardware up and running.

That would be fantastic if you could post the link to the new facebook group on your website. I also created a dedicated chat channel for Spokane on Discord "Spokane Mesh".

I'd be happy to share admin privileges to anyone wanting to help run those.

I'm very interested in the hackerbreakfast too, just probably won't be possible until after Christmas.

Thanks,

Ryan Hodges

Hey everyone,

Over the past few days I've been pondering about this mailing list and I think it should be kept alive. Maybe some tighter moderation could be turned on and I would volunteer to help do some moderation if necessary.  But the future use of this could be more for official announcements like you sent out the frequency changes and things like that. I'll start promoting the mailing list in the Facebook page and Discord that I set up.  Each time an important announcement or info gets sent out I will relay links to the Facebook group and Discord chat for those that aren't on the mailing list.

We now have 14 people in the Facebook group and 5 on Discord. Slowly come together.  I was finally able to get some chats going this morning on MeshCore so that makes me very happy.

End of the Month, the 30-foot pole I ordered should be arriving in the mail and I'll put my solar repeater on top of that. I really hope that's enough to establish links with others..

Cheers,

Ryan
