I received a letter from H&V, I'm sure many of you got it as well, but in case you didn't, here are some great bullet points from the letter:
They are upgrading their emissions control processes in order to
  • install state of the art filtration technology. Our solution incorporates the same level of filtration technology used in HEPA respirators, hospitals, and other critical applications. This will eliminate about 99% of filterable particulate emissions.
  • Fluoride emissions will be significantly reduced.
  • Overall water use will be reduced by more than 90%.
  • The steam plume above the plant will be virtually eliminated.
  • The noise level of the plant will be reduced.
Yay!!! Whoopee!!!

It was a nice, readable company mass-mailing.

What blew my mind was - "began making paper in the 1700s." - !

I liked the steam plume, assuming it was only strictly steam....

This is indeed heartening news. But let's keep an eye on them, in light of their many past transgressions. I understand there will be ongoing monitoring, and we need to track that to be sure these changes are achieving the desired results. Our Senator Sara Gelser is on this and will be a good source of information going forward. Eternal vigilance is the name of the game.

We don’t yet know what the volume of the 1% of size .3 microns or less emissions will be. Could be more (or less) than now.

Hmm. So the worst of the pollutants (as I understand it) could actually be greater in volume than now? That’s pretty disturbing. How would that come about?

Yes. Good news about saving water. However, one must look closely at the wording:
  • "99 percent of filterable particulate emissions." What about that other 1 percent?
  • "Noise level will be reduced." By how much? Five percent, or 50?
  • "Fluoride emissions will be significantly reduced." How much is "significant"?
  • "The steam plume … will be virtually eliminated" What exactly does "virtually" mean in this case?
I also find it interesting the company is now reaching out to the neighborhood, when they didn't make much of an effort to do that earlier, which makes one suspect they were hoping to slide through under the radar, and since that didn't work out, they are now doing this PR outreach. But it is something, and I'm grateful they are taking action.

While we remain vigilant and not take H&V's promises for granted, I think they represent big improvements. I want to say a hearty THANK YOU to Marilyn Koenitzer for her long-time unrelenting scrutiny of our factory neighbor, and to the community for turning out at those meetings at the Co-op and the Corvallis Library to show H&V that we're watching, we're educated on these matters, and we're engaged. We made this happen. Onward!

Thanks Charles! Others helped too, and the scrutiny isnt over yet. Stay tuned for more information. I have new info about the TCE cleanup and will report that and more about air quality in about a week. Marilyn
