Sonoff PIR3-RF sensor

I picked up a Sonoff PIR3-RF 433MHz motion sensor so I'd have something to try out with the Sonoff RF gateway I got. I assumed it would be a snap to make it work since it's one of the devices that is meant to work with the gateway in original form but unfortunately I have not been able to find much info so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I flashed Tasmota onto the gateway and loaded the Portisch firmware on the RF side. I can see messages being received but I can't make sense of what I'm getting. The sensor only seems to broadcast one message and it comes in about once every 30 seconds whether there's motion or not, I even tried putting the sensor away in a drawer so I'd be sure the cats weren't setting it off and still this is what I get:

Am I missing a step here? Do I need to pair the sensor to the bridge in order to get it to talk? Maybe it's defective? It seems like this would be a very common thing someone would try to do so I'm surprised I haven't found much. Perhaps my google-fu is just failing me lately.

Odd i use the bigger PIR2 sensors without any issues but a quick google

PIR3-RF has 2 working modes that alert and normal mode. In the alert mode, the sensor is triggered per 5s when someone enters the detection range. In the normal mode, the next alert trigger is activated if there is no motion detected within 1min after the previous detection.

try switching modes to alert mode?  

very interested in PIR3 battery life btw, PIR2 will last 18-24months on 2x NiCad rechargeable aa cells fwiw..

I actually JUST got this working a few minutes ago and had not had a chance to respond yet. There were two issues, one is that the battery I had was weak and apparently when that happens these sensors just start screaming the one and only thing they know how to say, over and over.

The other is an issue that has plagued me almost every step of the way in this project, the instructions I found were out of date and contained unnecessary steps. I found a slightly newer video on youtube that got me partway there and then some searching found the solution to the new errors.

Ideally at this point I'd have a writeup on exactly how I got this thing working but I was so intent on solving the problem that I didn't record all my steps. Probably the same reason the existing Home Assistant documentation is so terrible.
