I'm stumped.

I used to be able to create and join a private group with one or two other people and share the video window within a Pro Tools session and have the audio go to them via SonoBus. I would designate myself as Director, change the quality of the video, share the video window within Pro Tools and start recording Described Audio.

Now, no matter what I do, either as Director for VDO Ninja or just Push/View, which means I can't be Director, I cannot share the video window within Pro Tools. I can share any other window or the entire screen, but not the video window I want to share.

If I just use Push/View and go to choose the video window within Pro Tools, I get an error message: "Audio could not be captured. Please make sure you have an audio device available."

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Bruce Hayward

This sounds like a VDONinja issue, actually... you might consider contacting support over there. Also, what is Described Audio, and are you attempting to use audio features in VDO.Ninja? The URLs that SonoBus generates include several options that disable audio in vdo.ninja (such as noaudio and deafen), you may need to manually remove after you paste the URL into your browser if you have other intentions.

Hi Jesse,

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

Described Audio is for the visually impaired. A narrator inserts a description of what’s happening on the screen between any character’s dialogue. Here in Canada, it’s called Described Video, in the US, Described Audio. I need to be able to share the video window within Pro Tools so the narrator can see the video and it’s time code and come in at the appropriate time as I record them to my timeline at the proper timecode.

A while back I did this with a narrator using SonoBus and VDONinja with no issues and no problem sharing the video window within Pro Tools, now I can’t.

Subsequent to my post, I tried to share the video window within Pro Tools in a Microsoft Teams Meeting and in a Zoom meeting. I can share any window that’s open, but as soon as I try to share the video window within Pro Tools, I get an error that there is no camera in MS Teams and just no screen share in Zoom. I tried MS Teams in MS Edge and Google Chrome. No Joy. Only tried Zoom in MS Edge.

Some time ago there was an issue in MS Teams that no window could be shared, but that was quickly resolved.

Not sure where the fault is, but since it's happening in 3 different apps, it's probably something at my end. I’ll have to do some more research tomorrow and/or over the next few days.

Thanks again for the quick reply.

I’ve tried Microsoft Teams, VDONinja and Zoom in Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and Duck Duck Go. None of them can share the video screen within Pro Tools. I’ve attached a picture to show the video window within a Pro Tools session.

I can share any other window in the share screen dialogue in all three apps in all three browsers.

I’m not sure if it’s a Windows 10 issue – I’m on the latest – or something just peculiar to my computer.

I have managed to find a workaround, thanks to a post in one of the MS communities:

Region to Share - Free download and install on Windows | Microsoft Store

Works a charm in MS Teams and VDONinja., although I shouldn’t have to use it, but certainly glad I found it.

I also found an extension for Chrome and Edge that stops Windows from automatically changing the volume in a Teams or similar meeting when playing back audio. One of my clients is a Casino in Niagara Falls. I produce some of their radio commercials, recording a voice remotely using Source-Connect and having the client in the session using MS Teams. If it was only one feed of audio, the levels going to MS Teams are stable. With the voice and music going back to the client, the audio levels dropped considerably, apparently a “feature” in Windows.

The extension is for Chrome but also works in Edge: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/disable-automatic-gain-co/clpapnmmlmecieknddelobgikompchkk?pli=1

Sure hope it keeps working <sigh>

It could be since a pro tools update they have changed something on the type of output window.
It looks like your using windows, if so is it windows 11?
I ask because windows 11 has virtual desktops now too.
Sometimes it's been known for people to accidentally create a new desktop and be using that with out realizing.
On windows 11 this is normally on the task bar at the bottom and sits to the right of the search box. Looks like a black square on a white square.
Hovering over it with the mouse pops up any desktops open, if you just see desktop 1 then a blank window with a cross-hair and new desktop. Then you are using and in the default desktop.
IF when you hover over it and see desktop 1, desk top 2 then the image of desktop 2 shows the windows you have open on it then close this desktop and try again on desktop 1.

Other options is to use obs studio as a bridge, you can make a basic obs then add a source and choose gaming, or window capture, or if you have a 2nd monitor make the video full screen on that and use capture display device.

Another option you could try is to see if there is any detach option for the video on pro tools, this would put the video in it's own window detached from the main programs windows. This hopefully would then let you see the window in vdo.

Also you can use a &quality=0 to auto set quality, in the vdo manual it shows other options to achieve better quality and you can even capture the video is another vdo window then add this link so it auto puts the window to the right and bigger than cams
on all others vdo screens.

hope this helps, you said that you tried other programs too and non captured it so I don't think it is vdo, but maybe a setting or something changed on pro tools.
Make sure direct-x and your graphics drivers are up to date. If you installed anything that updated a vc distribution pack then get latest version of that form Microsoft's site.

not sure if this is working as can't see message after posting.
Anyway you coudl try using obs studio as like a bridge.
Make a blank scene 1920x1080 then add a source and try adding these sources, game capture, window capture and display device capture.
Sometimes game capture can pick up windows that don't dhow and also window capture may show it and if not if you have a 2nd display then display capture would grab it.
Then enable obs virtual cam, then this will be available in VDO as a video source.
