Floating latency problems

I've been playing with several friends in an online group since the beginning of COVID in 2020.  We started with Jamkazam and, sometime around 2022 we moved our "stuff" to Sonobus and we've played and recorded a lot music, original and covers (https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/u24lf9r5dy2nn5wdankhf/AFdLIrOL6vLGhLAfQQ2G_n0?rlkey=qjiqqvr8046mme0n6qengbrww&dl=0), through both programs.  After a summer hiatus last year, when we resumed our weekly sessions we had a LOT of latency problems, including fairly constant drifting of up and download times on individual users.  As a result, we've all but given up on playing together and Sonobus is mostly used for project discussions and playing recorded samples.

Sadly, we're all old and nobody in the group is particularly competent when it comes to internet troubleshooting.  We're all on Mac computers, running the latest OS, with a variety of audio interfaces from MOTU to Focusrite Scarlet to an A&H board with USB.  One of the group is still trying to worth through a WiFi connection,but when he's not in the mix the latency issues still happen.  I have no idea how to get us back to what we had two years ago, but it's threatening to end this group.

regards,
Tom

Hi, Tom.

I read your message and I understand how frustrating this situation must be, especially after so many years playing together and building such a great musical project.

I work with audio streaming, automation systems and remote technical support, and I'd be happy to help your group investigate what's causing the latency and synchronization problems. Since everything worked well a couple of years ago, there's a good chance that the issue is related to network configuration, operating system changes, router settings, audio interface settings, or even Sonobus itself.

If you'd like, we can start with a few questions about each member's setup, such as:

• Internet connection speed (upload and download);
• Whether the computer is connected via Ethernet or Wi-Fi;
• Router model and configuration;
• Sonobus audio settings (buffer size, bitrate and latency compensation);
• Audio interface model and driver versions.

If necessary, I can also provide remote assistance and access individual computers to analyze the configuration directly and try to restore the experience you had before.

Don't give up on the group yet—many latency problems can be solved with the right adjustments.

Best regards,
Mauro Bonan

Thanks for the reply Mauro,

We’re doing a session today at 3PM CST and I’ll try to gather all of that information then.  I have had a terrible time trying to get the other guys to test their internet connections, but I’ll abuse your email and see if I can use guilt to get some testing done today.  3 of the 4 of us are on wired connections, one on WiFI.  What kinds of questions do I need to ask for the router “configuration?”

Hi, Tom.

Thank you for your reply. I hope reinstalling everything helps, but I'd also like to share a little of my experience with SonoBus.

I'm a radio broadcast engineer from Bahia, Brazil, and I've been working with audio transmission for 26 years. Today, I use SonoBus as the main platform to connect a radio network that broadcasts football matches and live shows across several stations. We regularly maintain continuous connections from 2:00 PM until midnight, and also overnight broadcasts from midnight until 4:00 AM, often without interruption.

Our entire network relies on audio transmission through SonoBus, and, thank God, when the internet connection is stable and the ping is good, we rarely experience problems with latency or synchronization.

I've been using SonoBus since its early days, and throughout my career I've worked on football broadcasts, concerts and live events featuring some of Brazil's biggest artists.

Because your system worked well in the past and then suddenly started having problems, I believe it's worth carefully checking each computer, the network configuration, audio settings and the internet conditions of every participant. Sometimes, small changes in the operating system, routers or interface settings can create unexpected latency issues.

If you'd like, I'd be happy to help analyze everything step by step. I can even remotely access the computers, check the configurations and try to identify what's causing the problem.

Please count on my solidarity, my friendship and my willingness to help. I'd be very happy to see your group playing together again.

Mauro

All good advise!  Triple checking everything, and uninstallong/installing sonobus.

Hopefully I'll have good news on this soon.

Folks,

Big success today, the Sonobus gods looked favorable upon us.

Background:  two pianos, two Mac computers, ethernet connections, MTrack Solo and Scarlet, both using Sonobus.  Worked and then didn't work...garbled audio and piano from Scarlet user.

Solution:  uninstalled Sonobus and cleared all related items.  Installed Sonobus and reviewed all settings.  With a jitter buffer at or above 18 ms the problem disappeared.  At 18 ms the latency was good enough (42 ms ping) but we'll improve this.

Thanks all!

Mark
