Total LOC on Summary Page

Hi,

I've just upgraded our install here to 6.2, and it looks very nice.  Some things we can't do/see now (with the removal of the Projects view), but I see things will be changing again in 6.3, so I'll have a look at it after that I think.

One request - if it isn't already in the pipeline, would it be possible to put a Total LOC on the Summary page (along with Bugs, Vulnerabilities etc.)?  Looks like it was mentioned in things like https://jira.sonarsource.com/browse/MMF-387, but didn't make it for now.

It would be helpful in giving a summary of the project/size under analysis I think.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the kind words.

Can you tell me why you want to see total LoC on the 'About' page?

Thx,
Ann

Hi Ann,

I think the main thing for me (working with a small to medium sized codebase approx 100K LOC) would be along the lines of the less overall LOC we have then the better off we are (assuming we can still provide the same or better functionality).  This is particularly the case with refactoring/maintenance projects (which is what we're doing at present) I think.
On a slightly different tack, I think it would also provide some context in which to view the other summary stats.
Whilst LOC has its issues in terms of using it for various measurements, it does give some indication of the 'weight'(?) of the systems were working with.

Does that help, or was it explicitly not put into the summary stats (noting it is in the projects stats)?

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

Keep in mind that the About page is the default landing page only for anonymous users. Logged in users will land automatically on the projects page, and on the "All" version of that page is this distribution by size

Could this cover your need?

Hi Ann,

Yep, I did note it was only for anonymous users, out of interest, who was/is in mind when designing the page?  In some ways I think the overall info is interesting, so might be good to be able to find it even if I am logged in.
Given the number of projects we have (30 or so) its not tricky to figure out the total, I was just looking at it from the point of view that the summary info tells you how many problems there are, but doesn't give a perspective in terms of size - although saying that, maybe it doesn't matter :)

So, its not a big issue for me.  I think it would be nice/useful to have, but happy to listen to reasons otherwise (or if you think there's not much benefit to it :)  ).

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

We really had new adopters in mind when designing the page. The idea is that once you've started using SonarQube, you'll want to be logged in to land directly at your context. Right now, that means you land on My Projects, but we hope to offer more flexibility on that in the future.

And by the way, you can still get to this page after you're logged in; it's the 'About' link in the page footer.

Regarding total size, it got dropped from the final version for the reason you guessed: there was a lot to put on the page & that seemed like a less important piece of information.

Hi Ann,

Fair enough, I guess in my case sometimes the context I'm looking at is a particular project, but just as often (I think?) the context is the overall codebase.  I guess this is in part because its not huge overall - so we can look at it that way.  This is more in the lines of creating reports for 'higher up' in the chain :)  In that sense, seeing overall numbers can be useful I think.

Hopefully thats a helpful perspective, cheers,

Matt

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your input. That "higher ups" perspective is actually covered by the ability to create portfolios that's provided by the Governance Plugin($).
