Slack is not the official communication channel for So Make It.

BTW, I have been reporting our finances in the #treasury slack channel for months, so nothing should come as a surprise.

Its a proposal, not a decision. Allocation of funds is yet to be discussed, but without a theoretical budget in mind its hard to get a plan started.
Personally I was being very pessimistic, and 20% is more like it, and given the % of members who are electronics-inclined, that may be a little low.

Happy to discuss funds allocations with anyone interested, or listen to any ideas - just pile in!

The bottom line is, we have £10k to spend, and spend it we must, else we'll pay a hefty amount of tax on it. We're not going to hang around hanging onto it for that to happen. Time to make the space awesomer.

For those of us not actively watching slack, has the £10k grant arrived? I see that plans are being hatched to spend a significant amount of money on electronics but no other discussion of how the money should be apportioned.

Perhaps it might be wise to communicate to the members what the current state of affairs is before deciding to spend 10% of it?

It would be good to spend the biggest proportion of it on things that make the space safer and nicer.

And make tools we already have work properly.

There should probably be some sort of survey about what is needed and wanted, as well as an update on the needs identified by the health and safety committee

Apologies that it wasn't announced here that the grant had come through. It was pretty much a formality to get it and no hassle at all.

The money should of course be spent according to what members preferences and needs are, as well as what the space needs to be functional. I'm sure there will be lots of different ideas and we do have the rest of the financial year to spend the grant so it doesn't need to be a race. Having said that the sooner we get the space looking nice and with nicer things in, the better for everyone.

Some things we needed to do anyway and would have done so without the grant. Things such as the electrics, health & safety etc. Most likely we can just crack on with those things without further discussion. There are also plenty of small sundry items that have been used up, worn out or lost. I don't think it merits too much to and fro on low value items.

Dave's ideas for spending on the electronics equipment are just ideas. You are right that we need to get an idea of what else members might want to make the space better. We'll have a look at that and I welcome your input as I know you did a survey before.

What I think might be really nice is if we have a few members head up a specific area that they know about. That way the discussion happens between the people that care about it without having to involve everyone at every stage which inevitably slows everything down. Likewise, we could think about how we can go from a member suggesting we buy something to it actually arriving in the space - who signs it off, how we claim back expenses etc.

I would be keen to have a members' meeting this coming Tuesday (over video chat) to get ideas bounded about.

Yeah, I want to be clear that I'm not opposing Dave's idea, just making sure that we're not skipping steps.

Assigning any percentage of the grant to one particular project without at least some idea of the big picture seems premature.

I'm happy to knock out a survey in the next few days to see what we're looking at.

Oh good - I was about to ask you if you had bandwidth to handle setting up and managing a survey :)

I'll setup the electronics-subcom, and then move on to the workshop-subcom and get that moving. For H&S stuff, as Ed says, the trustees will just do that.

There are a few other areas I can think of that I'll suggest at some point.

Dave.
