SPN Law & Policy Discussion Groups - Next Steps

Dear SPN community,

Please join members of the Law & Policy Working Group for our first discussion session on the Code of Best Practices for Fair Use in Software Preservation. Our hope is to encourage a stronger understanding of and confidence in Fair Use as a tool for software preservation across the SPN membership, and we look forward to discussing the Code with all of you.

This meeting will take place on September 15, 2025, at 2PM EDT  over Zoom, and will be facilitated by Brandon Butler and the members of the SPN Law & Policy Working Group. Please register for the event via this registration page.  

Our first meeting’s agenda is to introduce the discussion series, gauge interest in the identified “Situations” outlined in the guide, and determine the topic of the following discussion sessions based on our discussion. It would be helpful to know what specific software preservation actions stakeholders across the cultural heritage field are doing – and what they would like to do in the future – as we prepare to facilitate the discussion.
