Between religion, politics and a little alcohol
It was the year 2007. In Mount Vernon, a small village in the US state of Texas, a businessman decided to open a bar next to the Baptist church.
The people of the church stood up against it. First they wrote complaint letters to the municipality, then every night they sat in the church and started praying against the bar. The construction of the bar continued.
When the bar was almost ready and was about to open, there was strong lightning and thunder, and lightning struck the bar building directly, due to which the entire building collapsed. The people of the church rejoiced that "the Lord accepted their prayer."
But the bar owner sued the church and its people for $2 million because according to him all his investment was ruined due to the church's prayers, whether the effect was direct or indirect.
During the court hearing, the church completely denied this. They said their prayers had nothing to do with this incident.
In support of this, they presented a study by Dr Herbert Benson of Harvard University, which said that prayers and blessings have no effect on the events of life.
The judge heard the entire case and while giving the verdict said:
"I do not understand what decision I should give in this case. But it is clear that we have a bar owner who believes completely in the power of prayers, and there is an entire church group that does not believe in the power of prayers at all!"
