"The liberals, the Marxists, the Opposition leaders, the alternate media and other wandering minstrels wanted to seize the opportunity, to offer the protests a larger sweep to unsettle the Modi regime, but there were no reasoned paths to enter Jantar Mantar. These people were filled with nostalgia of earlier protests from 2011 and from the 1975 Emergency, and from international student movements of the 20th century, but the Gen Z that they had suddenly come to admire revelled in insouciant subversion, gasping irreverence and unintended anarchy. They did not allow usurpers to pitch their tent.
However, Marxist student-leaders were more successful than others. They tried to distinguish themselves with the coherence of their party agenda and sanitized slogans. But they also cynically reminded one of a millennial called Kanhaiya Kumar, a cherished Marxist student rebel who had merged his revolutionary path with the sedateness of the Congress party in 2021. Will the Communist parties in India be able to hold on to their articulate Gen Z leaders? After all, they were already in the charmed presence of Rahul Gandhi at 10 Janpath on July 25. They also addressed the press alongside him. He praised them and they praised him."
