The Iranian people incorporated an additional expert supervisory body—under the banner of the Guardian Council or the Assembly of Experts—within their constitutional structure, alongside the president, cabinet, and parliament, to safeguard their public will against imperialism and foreign domination. This system reflects Iran’s sovereign political choice and should not be judged by Western standards.
The United States of America seeks to undermine this system simply because it does not conform to the contemporary Western political models. The killing of its senior leader—without regard for his age or even the sanctity of the month of Ramadan—is a morally deficient and grave act.
Such actions signal a dangerous regression in global politics, suggesting that the world may be moving away from the principles of sovereign equality established after the Peace of Westphalia and the formation of the United Nations following the Second World War, and back toward a more aggressive, pre-modern power order.
