Powerline offers some very nice motors suitable for F5J. These are geared inline motors. The 1015 series are fairly lightweight, about 80 grams. I have the Micro 1015/12. It is very similar to the Reisenauer Viper 1020/12T in weight and power. The dimensions of both are nearly identical. Either motor will fit in the narrowest fuselage. The main difference is in the gearing. The Reisenauer has a gear ratio of 5:1 with 6mm shaft. The Powerline is 6.75:1 with a 5mm shaft. There is also a difference in KV. The Viper is 5000KV while the Powerline is 6667KV. There are, however, alternate versions of both that use motors with less KV. I use three cells with each. Although Powerline recommends two cells for the 1015/12, I found this setup to be rather anemic, so I increased the cell count to three. Much better.

The Powerline has forced air cooling just behind the gearbox. This keeps the motor cooler. However, I still use a turbo spinner (ventilated) with vent holes in the firewall for added air flow. Both motors will get quite warm when used at their max power level for short <10-second bursts.

The motors Powerline uses are actually Lehner LMT motors. If you want specification on the Powerline motors, you'll need to go the Lehner website. You won't find them on the Powerline website. Also, if you're using eCalc for motor calculations, look under Lehner.

I've been comparing the performance of the two motors using the Sprite Hot as test bed. I'm using an RFM 15x8.5 prop, 55-amp ESC, and 3S 1200mAh 60C lipo. Bench testing shows both as having very similar power & current draw at full throttle, about 50 amps at 500 watts. Flight testing has likewise been similar. The Sprite climbs equally well with either motor. I can't tell the difference, but I'm leaning towards the Powerline because I like the forced air cooling. Btw, the Powerline costs about 50% more.

Chris Pyle was the first to get several of these.  I have a 1025 and am very happy with it's fit and performance. This is the perfect solution to the problem of converting a narrow fuse F3J model to electric power, as I did with my Xplorer2.

I think another good motor is the Tenshock F5J that comes with a 4.75:1 gearbox. Price is good at $190.00. Just received one but have not used it in a glider yet. I have done some 3S test runs with it and it is the smoothest running motor/gearbox I have experienced. Will probably use it on my next full house woody, now being designed.

TS-GDM1510A Planetary Gear Drive Motor(4.75:1)

Including:

TS-GB13A gearbox*1

TS-MI-EVO1510GA Motor*1

Informations:

Length:58.2mm

Maximum Diameter: 29mm

Weight: 107g

Shaft diameter: 5mm

Installation hole distance: 19mm

KV: 4650KV/3550KV /3950KV/5000KV

Introduction:

1.TS-GB13A gearbox shell is processed by high-precision CNC, which ensures the strength and reduces the redundant

weight as much as possible without losing the beauty. The process of CNC cutting and heat treatment hardening is

adopted to make the gear reach gear precision level 6, and the design of planetary gear with full needle roller ensures

the smoothness and durability of the gear box in the limit environment.

2.TS-MI-EVO1510GA series motor is based on tenshock high-end motor Evo series. It is specially optimized and improved

to meet the needs of current popular glider f5j project. The shell adopts CNC hollow design to reduce weight and improve

heat dissipation effect. The stator core is made of high performance silicon steel sheet with thickness of 0.1mm,which

effectively reduces the eddy current loss under high frequency operation.Copper silver alloy wire is used in the coil to

reduce the internal  resistance of the coil in a limited space. The rotor is made of high-grade NdFeB magnet and wrapped

with high-strength Kevlar which can ensure the magnetic field strength and effectively prevent the rotor from bursting under

high rotation, Combined with 20 years of motor manufacturing experience of tenshock, its overall performance has reached a new level.
