I'm interested in helping with the design and build of the SnoBot Arm.

Looking forward to setting up mechanism(s) to coordinate ongoing effort with others interested in working on this aspect of the SnoBot.

Brad,

Since you are leaning towards a SCARA design (based on our post-meeting discussion), I can offer an actuator for the duration of the project that may be able to handle the vertical movement; it has 500 mm travel using a lead screw operated by a stepper motor.  Rough specs are on the linked web page; it weighs 1690 g (on my digital kitchen scale).  I'll bring it to the next meeting, along with a claw candidate.

Brad,

Great! Thanks for the impetus to start this. Let's see how this Google group works for this communication, or if we need to find something else. You should be able to include images in the group email.

What are you thinking for arm design? I'm familiar with servos as joints and have used Adafruits 16-channel servo driver before with great success. I've also used steppers and their drivers. (that's a good lookin actuator, Don!)

Here's a Thingiverse project for a SCARA arm.  It has several "remixes" by others.  The images (especially exploded diagram) my be useful for design details even if we don't want a 3-D printed arm.
