Mark, I'm using the ldr from a neato vacuum.  It rotates 5 times per second and does a distance reading 360 times per revolution.  $60 on eBay if you wait for it to be cheaper than average.  If needs to be rotating at the right speed before it turns it's laser on.  I bought a driver board for it that provides the output over ubs (straight into the raspberry pi).

Controls the xv-11 distance sensor.  It needs a teany micro computer board.  USB output
