Good afternoon Smuggers,

I hope you had a lovely Christmas.

I have a Magic Mouse (the rechargeable one) which I use with my M1 Mac mini (running Monterey. This afternoon it has stopped working. I’ve rebooted the computer several times. All that happens is that I get as far as inputting the password. When I hit return the desktop appears with the cursor in the top left hand corner. When I move the mouse nothing happens. I’ve tried using a wireless trackpad I used to use years ago without success. As I can’t use the mouse I can’t get into control panels to check the Bluetooth settings.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Best wishes for the new year.
Philippe

Just to suggest the obvious 😉, is its battery charged?

Hi Stephen, Thanks for the suggestion. I connected the mouse to my iPad and it works perfectly. It seems to me that the problem must be in the Mac mini.

Is bluetooth enabled on the Mini? Try an SMC reset, sometimes that resets the bluetooth controller

The SNC reset appears to have worked. About a minute after the desktop appeared the mouse began to work.

All the best for the new year and thanks for the suggestion.

ok, wait, wait. I wrote out a message saying to reset the SMC then saw all kinds of webpages saying that you can't reset the SMC on M1 machines, so discarded it and now see it worked;)

Do you mind saying what you actually did (eg hold down power button at start-up or leave it 30 seconds etc) because knowing we can sometimes get the same results as resetting SMC might be useful! Asking for an m1 Mac mini owner (me).

cheers,
Jason

Hi Jason,

I saw all those pages as well, and followed the instructions without success. I eventually found a site that suggested holding down shift, option and command whilst starting up the Mac. About a minute after booting up a message appeared briefly on the desktop saying the mouse had connected and it began to work perfectly.

Regards
Philippe

That's helpful, thank you. I wonder what it does?;) Given long enough, this will help me (or someone else I encounter with a similar issue), much appreciated.

Cheers,

Jason
