Thunderbolt drives?

Hi all,

I’ve now got an M1 iMac with Thunderbolt 3 ports and thoughts it might be worth getting a whizzy thunderbolt drive to match. They are pricey compared to “normal” drives so was wondering if any of you think it’s worth the extra dosh?

It’s Time Machine backups of code libraries for Xcode, some Curio projects, artwork design and game backups I expect, maybe a bit more but can’t think of what at the moment. No huge video files though!

Any experience/opinions happily received.

Cheers,
Stephen

Nice! How's the iMac?! The colour and style is growing on me whilst still not seen one in person, so to speak!

For my MBPro I went (without much research) for a MyPassport SSD, largely for portability, speed etc, hence I don't leave it plugged in all the time but do a weekly TimeMachine backup to it. I know that's not exactly belt and braces, but suffices for me with so much in the Cloud these days.

Just picked it up at Currys and been fine.

(Sorry, MyPassport is the range by Western Digital - and it's quite 'stylish' so presumably one pays a touch more for that too, even though it spends most its time in drawer or bag!)

Thanks for your thoughts there - I’ve had two WD portable drives and one MyBook? 2TB drive but they are USB 2 and all mechanical and tended to take a fair while. I’d be happy with another of their drives, SSD, but they don’t do any Thunderbolt drives. Maybe for the amount of data I have, USB3.2 is fine.

As for the iMac, it is a joy. So beautifully made & designed, the trackpad is huge, the screen is amazing, the cables lovely, super fast, the keyboard is great and it can be carried with one hand - almost portable! 😆

Cheers,
Stephen

Ah, I'm not quite sure I've kept up with what is USB-C and what is Thunderbolt... sorry!

And good to hear about the iMac.... whilst I'm patiently waiting for any imminent announcements about an iPad Mini update. I'm keen on that and a pencil, just not the current model if they're about to update!

Just to add to the confusion USB 4 is reportedly just around the corner:

Remember the simple old days... like loading the OS from floppy disks on my Mac SE, or loading Bungie's inimitable Marathon on to my Mac 6100.
