My MacBookPro (2017) version 10.15.4 is very sluggish when I open it in the morning. I often wonder if it is going to open at all. The desktop is dim, and there is no response when I tap on password. Then after a couple of minutes it lights up and opens. Is this ominous? Is there anything I can do?

Is there plenty of free space on there Virginia? If your Mac starts running low on storage space then everything will being to slow down. You may find this useful: https://www.lifewire.com/how-much-free-drive-space-needed-2260187

FYI: I have a MacBook Pro 2015 model on 10.15.5 and it’s behaving fine so, it’s not age! It could be a hardware issue, but it’s always worth checking the simplest and cheapest things first!

I’m sure you’ve done all the basic stuff, like shutting down the MacBook and powering it up again, resetting the SMC, a sticky key on the keyboard and so on? Possibly updating to the current sub-version may do the trick?

10.15.5 has just been released, might be an idea to update via System Preferences > Software Update, see if that helps

All useful suggestions.  Thank you.  I have been wondering about storage space.  On disk utility it says :  Used 11.13 GB  Other volumes 86.17. Free 402.67.  Does this mean there is lots of storage?  When I first got the MBP, I made a partition so that my husband could use it.  This is not necessary any more.  Should I get rid of the partition?

Did you create another user or another partition? Sounds like you’ve got 400GB space which is plenty.

It was a partition but only a small one.  I think it was 10gb.  I’m wondering about resetting  SMC but what scares me is I don’t  know where the power button is. Sounds daft, I know.  But on this model it doesn’t have an obvious power button. For this reason, I have rarely closed the MBP down.  The top strip on the keyboard lights up according to what you are doing.  The top right of the strip may be power button.  But is not marked as such.

The fingerprint sensor is the power button. I’d shut the Mac down, then hold down shift+ctrl+alt and push/release the power button once, then let go of the other keys. Wait 10 seconds then start up again by pushing the fingerprint sensor button

If that doesn’t help, try a PRAM reset : start up the Mac holding alt+cmd+P+R until you hear the startup chime a second time, then let go

Thanks, Sam.  I’ve done it.  Fingers crossed it will have sorted it out.  If not, I will try a PRAM reset as you suggest.  (And thank you for explaining about the power button).  Virginia
