Hello Smuggers!

This morning I tried to share a folder from my Files on my iPhone. I found the link to share, pressed it and it then disappeared. I’m worried I have deleted it.

There is an earlier iCloud backup. Is it possible to restore that backup to my phone?

Best wishes
Catherine

Hi Catherine

If you log into iCloud.com and go to iCloud Drive there should be a Trash/Undelete function there.

If the folder wasn’t in iCloud Drive but was in the Files section just on the iPhone itself, you’d need to wipe/reset the phone and restore from your last iCloud or iTunes backup, which may be a bit extreme!

Omg Sam!!!

Thank you!

That has just worked!

I didn’t know about using iCloud.com, but will definitely do so in the future.

I accidentally deleted a folder, was is down to me being left handed. The option to Share had Delete underneath. I can see that it’s less likely to happen if you are using your right hand.

I wanted to share a folder about my grandmother with my brother, who has just joined Ancestry.

She was an amazing woman, so here’s a picture of her, with many many, many thanks!!!

Thank you Gilly!

She was born in working class Hartlepool, the daughter of a coal trimmer.

She lived in Hartlepool her whole life, and kept her kids with her during the war, because she didn’t want them evacuated.

In 1952, my mum had a son out of wedlock. My grandmother kept the family together and made sure he wasn’t taken away. They all lived in a tiny terraced house, with a backyard & outdoor loo.

I was born 10 years later, also in Hartlepool.

I’m still the only person I know who has a brother, born in the 50’s & 60’s, who wasn’t given up for adoption.

That was down to my amazing grandmother, Evelyn.

Like my mum, she wanted everyone to be happy and to do whatever they wanted to do!

Best wishes,

I’m so glad you managed to retrieve that Catherine! She looks great and what you’ve told us about her is quite something. I’ve recently been using Synium’s Mobile Family Tree app to process hundreds of family photos and there are more documents and certificates to add and organise.

If you’re after a genealogy program for the Mac/iPad/iPhone I very much recommend it and their service is excellent. Just a happy customer, as they say.

Cheers,
Stephen

Hi Stephen!

I’ve been using Ancestry since 2014 since they lured me in with the offer of a free trial.

I didn’t want to research my history, because my father was a violent coercive controller, and I thought I might find more like him on his side. Turns out there’s no one else like him, so I can now happily imagine having him carted off to jail now that coercive control is a crime.

Like my grandmother and mum, I know how to be positive and peaceful.

My father told me everyday what I couldn’t do, but I knew from my family, teachers and friends that he was talking nonsense.

In the 70’s at my mixed comprehensive school, I asked if I could study computer science and was told that the course was for boys only!

I went off to university, got a degree and still didn’t know anything about computers.

I did a PGCE to become an early years teacher. My first job was in Islington and the first place I lived was in Stoke Newington, with a female head of department in computing at the local polytechnic. She showed me some of the work done by a female student and l knew I wanted to do the same.

I had still had no experience of computers.

I found a course at City Lit college, called Computers for the Terrified. I went along, discovered I couldn’t break the computer and I was off.

I’ve been self taught since then and the best courses have been Apple Teacher courses, which are free and amazing!

I’m from Hartlepool, which was a steel town. It was the main employer and every family had at least one member working in it.

I grew up watching the furnaces from my bedroom window.

I feel that Hartlepool women like my grandmother, mum and me have steel inside us.

The Angel of the North was made from Hartlepool steel and every time I see and visit it, I can feel the positive energy of all Hartlepool women!

Best wishes

Hi Jason!

I think it’s amazing I’m actually able to type this without pain.

I developed RSI pain in both hands and arms in 2004 because of teacher paperwork overload. I had to get used to not being able to use my hands as much as I wanted and having to rest them until the pain stopped.

I have to have the smallest iPhone because I have small hands. My previous phones always had to be attached to a charger, because of short battery life.

When they brought out the iPhone SE, I bought it. It’s been brilliant for me. Same size. Lots of storage and long battery life.

I broke my lower arm 3 years ago. I was worried it might not recover, but then Wordle was invented and it’s been amazing hand physio!

Also down to being full of CBD oil!

Best wishes,

Thanks again Catherine for such a great message - it sounds like it’s not only your grandmother that’s an amazing woman!
