Good afternoon Smuggers

I’m considering upgrading the memory in my iMac from 8GB to 16GB.

Can this be done and, if so, can I do it myself or should I take it to the local Mac shop?

Roughly, how much do you think it should it cost?

Many thanks,
Derek

Hi Derek,  I use Mr Memory who I think are based in Sussex.  For your computer it should cost 37.99 pounds for 8Gb memory.  They recommend fitting in pairs.  You could upgrade to 32Gb on that model.  Their website is very informative including videos on how to change memory.  My 2011 Mac was easy, I just had to remove narrow panel underneath the screen so it didn't involve disturbing main components.   Howard

not sure about the mechanics of opening it but if you go to crucial.com they align their stuff with whatever machine you have to tell you what is suitable and how much it costs.

Out of interest, what prompted you to do this? I think 8 gig runs Mojave smoothly unless you have massive photos/video/similar (4 isn't enough, I find). It might be that an SSD would give you what you want more effectively than extra RAM.

cheers

Hi Jason

I’m learning After Effects, and it’s OK on my 2019 MacBook Pro with 16GB but a bit sluggish on my iMac.

Thanks for the suggestion.

It may be that an SSD (with fast paging of virtual memory) would make more difference but frankly I'm probably out of my depth at this point, especially if it's about opening the thing up! If RAM proves physically difficult to replace but the HD isn't, an SSD would speed things up across the board (looks like you have an old-fashioned spinning drive from that screenshot?)

At this point we wonder when the likes of Sam will arrive;)

I’d go for an ssd generally, as Jason said it’ll speed up virtual memory more than just more ram would. After effects relies heavily on the graphics card, you might find your MacBook Pro has a better one installed.
