Connecting new MacBook Pro to old Cinema Display

Hi everyone

I've now got my replacement MBPro (for those following the fact my last was stolen).

All up and running.

I purchased a DVI to USB-X adaptor to connect my old Apple LCD Cinema Display. Previously it worked fine with DVI, to Mini DVI adaptor to my old MacBook Pro (late 2011).

But now upon connecting it's recognised, but flickers constantly. Presumably it's a refresh rate problem?

Is there a way of making the monitor work with this laptop? Would hate to have to now replace that also.

I wondered that so did some testing...

I went to a friend's office and plugged in two HDMI HP monitors. One old, one much newer.

One flickered, one was fine.

Which makes me think it's to do with the age of the monitors that can't handle the output from the MBPro perhaps?

Try changing the resolution/refresh rate in System Preferences > Display? See if it improves

Generally USB-C to DVI should work yes, it’s all digital. I’d try a different adapter, or a different DVI cable

The different DVI cable seems tricky as that presumably means trying to source something on eBay? There's lots of cables 'in one' and the brick itself.

I'll return the adaptor to Amazon and take it from there maybe. Just didn't want to go to that trouble if it's not the adaptor given the HDMI and USB 2.0 parts work fine. Could it be the DVI 'gubbins' inside is the problem do yoou think? Just seems a little unlikely....?!

Bought a pricier dongle and it works like a charm.

Will return the cheaper 'multiport' one.

What's the adage here? ;)
